The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Loss of connection with patch panel

Asked by christucker in Networking Cables, Structured Cabling

We are rewiring our network and introducing patch panels to keep things organized.  Everything for the most part has gone smoothly.  However, we are having connection problems with a few of the hosts.  Our old cable design is having a cat5 cable running straight from the computer to a Nortel or HP switch.  In some cases we have a few computers connected to a small hub or switch, and from that small hub or switch a cat5 cable that runs to our main Nortel or HP switches.  What we are doing is taking the cat5 cables that run to our main two switches, cutting off the connectors, and punching them down on a patch panel, then connecting the panel to a main switch with a patch cable.

As I mentioned before, this has gone well expect for a few instances where when we move the old cable to the patch panel and then connect the patch cable, we get link lights on the switch and on the NIC card of the computer, but no connection.  If you look at the computer, it says it is connected, yet all pings and connection attempts fail.  We've tried different patch cables, different ports on the switch, different ports on the patch panel, and even ran a new cable from the computer to the patch panel but with no luck.  I've checked our main switches and there are no collisions or errors being reported.  This has happened with a direct connection from the patch panel to the computer, and from the patch panel to one of our small switches.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.Start Free Trial
