Question

How long can a cat6 cable be from a demarc to the csu/dsu on a t1 circuit?

Asked by: CTWaukesha

I know the limit on cat6 ethernet is like 340 feet, but how long can the cable run be from the telephone companies demarc to the server room where the routers and csu/dsu units are located? This is a brand new building and we are going to use cat6 cable and I estimate the length of the run at around 500' - at what point am I going to need to install a repeater? Can it simply be punched down onto a 110 block and patched in from there or am I better off crimping an RJ45 end directly onto the end of the cable?

500' is pushing it for any copper run. No matter what cat class your cable is the problem is still going to be evident.
In copper terms: distance=resistance
a) The more distance you have for a copper cable run, the more resistance you'll have when trying to use that cable for data purposes. (Which translates to slower data throuoghput, signalling loss, packet drops, and ultimately a longer path to troubleshoot in the event of a failure in the future)

So, if you suspect your run is going to be that long you can attempt to cheat the length by using a hub/router as a "pass-thru" point along the way or just simply run fiber between those 2 points and drop back out into copper at your end point.

500' is probably going to cause some problems.

One solution would be to install the CSU and router near the demarc and then use the Cat6 for the ethernet side. Then you can drop a repeater in so you don't exceed 100 meters.

The maximum distance for T1 service between demarc and DSU is 655 feet.
You can go a little more by adjusting the attenuation in the Line Build Out command.
LBO Settings (Cisco)
Short = <  655 feet
Long = > 655 feet

Tell the phone company to put the smartjack in the computer room. Then your patch is short and the length problem is theirs. (not that there will be a length problem) Either way, you won't need a repeater on a T1 circuit.
