I am having a problem tracing our network cables. We use a mix of CAT5e and CAT6. I am using an Extech Tone Generator 40180. I can get tone from the generator, but as soon as i plug into the wall jack the tone goes dead. The data cables go from the wall plate to a patch panel and then to a switch. Would the Tempo AT8L fix my issue? I am thinking spiting the tone would help?

BTW, the AT8L mentioned by the questions author looks like a nice little gadget for LAN testing since it can blink either switch or PC link LEDs at the other end of the circuit and has full 8 position RJ break-out plus aligator clips...
If you have all your cicruits from the panel connected to a switch this would certainly be an easier way to find out which switch port you are on when you plug this into the wall. That being said, you really shouldn't leave un-used circuits connected to the switch. That's just asking for trouble... (I never leave them all connected ... wink wink... nudge nudge...)

Just for clarification, are you testing for tone from horizontal cabling all the way through to a switch? If you are, for example, putting the generator on the horizontal cabling and hitting the probe on the switch, you will not get a response as the switch is a smart device which will only bridge connections with MAC addressing contained in PDUs and not straight physical tone. Try placing the probe on the patch panel instead, as everything you are dealing with from between the wall jack and patch panel should just be pure structured cabling.
