Thank you very much! it's a useful page. You mentioned network drops above, what does drop mean exactly? is it the network cable from back of the patch panel to network jack?
For the patch panel, the back of the each cable correspond to each RJ45 port in the front of the panel? is it like the one I draw in the picture??
and my last question.. is the patch panel a layer 1 device? without a switch ports on patch panel won't be able to communicate right?
The drop is the network jack in the wall. The wires coming into the back do correspond the rj45 ports on the front.
As far as what layer your looking at, it has been three years since I had to study OSI for any tests, but the patch panel does no communicating, think of it more like a bunch of couplers, just passing data along. Devices on either side of it are not aware of it.

A patch panel is a panel where all the network cables in your building (or section thereof) are patched into the back, and the front holds RJ-45 ports. You would use a patch panel along with your switch rack, so that a given cable goes from wall port to patch panel to network switch. Ideally each wall port will be labeled to correspond with its port on the patch panel, allowing you to activate and deactivate network drops very simply.
