Question

Cannot connect to file share when connect via VPN

Asked by: onemorecoke

When I connect to our VPN (Pix VPN box), I cannot connect to a Windows XP file share.  If I am inside the firewall, the same client computer can connect fine.  I can connect to shares on a snap drive just fine, so it seems that the Windows XP file shares are not making it through.  The firewall on the XP computer is not causing the problem because I can connect just fine inside the firewall.

Are the Windows XP box and the Snap drive on the same subnet?  Only asking because its possible that the routes are setup through VPN/PIX for access to one but not the other. Also, do you have any static routes on the Windows XP box itself?  I probably should have asked this question first, because it would rule out the others, but can you ping the Windows XP box through VPN?

What do your access-lists look like for clients connected to the VPN.
tcp 137-139 and 445 are all suggested to be open for acceses domain shares I would ensure that you are not being blocked by the PIX on any of these ports?   Not really enough info to completely give a reason of why this is occuring to you..

Is this a LAN2LAN tunnel or an IPSec Connection from a client?
Do you have other connectivty to the machine in question?
Are you going from on Interface to another on the PIX or does the traffic from the VPN client origniate on the same interface as the target machine?

Asawatzki, yes the snap and the windows XP are on the same subnet.  Not set static routes on the xp box.  Yes, you can ping the xp box through the VPN.  It is almost like netbios is being limited?  I dont know enough about it though.  FYI, I did try enabling netbios over TCPIP in the WINS tab in advanced TCPIP setup, it did not help

Nuqsolot, I am not sure about the lan2lan or ipsec connection actually, where should I look for that setting?  I can remote connect and VNC to the machine fine so there this activity to the xp box.  I am not sure about your last question (over my head).  In an attempt to maybe help, I am using the default settings in the cisco 4.6 client.  If there are some other settings you suggest, I am open to it.

Thanks

Well I was trying to determin if you were using a Client, whcih you are or it this was some sort of lan2lan tunnel where you don't need a client installed as the tunnel is created by two hardware endpoints.

If you can RDP and VNC to the machine then maybe the file sharing ports listed above are not allowed.

Is your VPN client subnet on a diff subnet from the server?  Do you have access-lists configured anywhere between the two, if they are on diff sn,,,  if so they may be allowing the traffic for the vnc/rdp service but not the file sharing.  Do you have acces to the PIX where the VPN info is setup?  Can you post the config related to this?  Also a traceroute from your connected client to the server in question.

Nuqsolot, the LAN side of the VPN (gateway) is on the same subnet as the XP box.  The VPN client, is used from various locations (cable modems, hotels, etc) so the IPs are different, but once the connection to the VPN is made, the client is assigned an internal IP.  I did try to change the virtual VPN network connection on the client computer to use Netbios over TCPIP, but that did not help either.  I dont have the access to the PIX, and I probably would not even know how to get what you need to see.

when you connect to the vpn and getting assigned an ip address,  are you also getting a dns server assigned to your client? If yes, is the dns traffic to/from your client and dns server allowed over the VPN? You can view this detail on your cisco vpn software status/statistics.

by: onemorecokePosted on 2007-11-09 at 07:59:54ID: 20250413

Yes, a DNS server is being assigned to the client it is server is accessable over the VPN.  But since I am using an IP address to connect to the share, it should not matter right?

by: NugsolotPosted on 2007-11-09 at 11:32:31ID: 20252290

Maybe try a newer version of the Cisco VPN Client?  If your IP assigned when on VPN and the Server your trying to connect to are on the same subnet i don;t really see there being any sort of restriction between them but then again Its hard to tell without knowing exactly how your vpn setting are setup in the PIX your connecting to... You may neeed to involve the people who adminiister that box.

I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM... did you find a solution?

by: onemorecokePosted on 2007-12-28 at 11:39:39ID: 20544447

It was the firewall setting on the client computer.  It was fine with internal addresses but the VPN was an outside address and it did not go through.
