perhaps the computer has a static IP address? Try hitting websites via public IP address, www.google.com would be http://64.233.169.103

In the meantime I set him up with the windows VPN, and it is working fine, but I am wondering why it is working on all the computers but his. He doesn't have a firewall and I disabled the symantec AV to check it.
I have read that I might need to add the server name and IP address to the LMhost, but I am not sure how that will solve the issue.
anyone has any suggestions?
thanks

Yes I included the DNS server inside the network that is why when other tech told me to add them to the lmhosts it seemed strange to me.
No it gets its IP through DHCP and the VPN network and the internet network are not even on the same subnet so I am not sure what the issue could be. I am going to reconnect to his computer and have a better look.
do you know which other test I could run?
thanks for your help
It could be the MTU - if the encrypted packets are fragmented and then put back together it breaks the hash on the encryption so the packets are dropped.
There should be a tool in the start menu program group for the VPN client that lets you change the MTU - it will need a reboot. It will have very little effect on what he does I should image so just go ahead and drop it to the minimum preset value and give it a try. If it works then start increasing the values until it breaks and then drop it back again. If not then put the setting back to where it was.
Start
Programs
Cisco Systems VPN Client
Set MTU
Select your network interface port
by default it's set to 1500, but you can adjust it to 1300.
But more importantly, are the routes in????
Once the computer is connected, on your lower right hand corner, by the time/date, you should see a yellow or green padlock, right-click on it and click on STATISTICS. lastly, click on ROUTE DETAILS, and make sure those routes matches up with your computer. It doesn't matter if the DNS or MTU is set correctly, IF it doesn't have the route, then it won't work.
General troubleshooting. Is the questionable computer have the same interface speed and duplex settings? Do the Cisco VPN client versions match up? Have you uninstall and reinstall the Cisco VPN client.

Did you set up the VPN group to include the DNS servers inside your network? It is possible his wife's laptop already has the LMHOSTS entries...
