Configure FW to work with PPPoA/oE settings

Hi Experts.  I have a NetGear v1 FVS318 FW/router that I am setting up for a client that is using DSL.  Their ISP requires username/password and is configured with PPPoA/35 settings.  I had the ISP switch the mode to PPPoE so the only part left is installing the FW.

When the netgear is installed, is there any settings that I need to make to the DSL Router?  When the ISP made the switch, he mentioned I may want to put the dsl router into "bridge" mode.  Does this sound correct?  Any other recommendations?

Thanks!

sorry - that was badly phrased.....what I meant to say was that the modem that's connected to the line should be in bridge mode.  The Router - your new Netgear will then handle routing/firewalling etc, with it's external interface having the public IP address of the organisation....

It's getting late in the day and we only have decaf in the office, so apologies!

Oh.......that does make sense. I am learning something else about DSL.  I typically deal with cable or T1's which seem to be a little easier to config.

Hahahahaha!!  You did fine.  Somehow I knew what you meant.  <Great blog by the way.  I added it since it's author seems pretty knowledgeable>

And there's RobWill.  I am waiting for the outage window to be approved by the client and then I will push forward.  Thanks again for the help.  If you weren't across the pond, I would buy you a drink after this.

I'm on this side of the pond :-) I'll take the drink.
However, 1000 miles NE of you. East Coast Canada.
Actually Roachy1979 I had hoped to be in the UK this week but it didn't work out.
I'm missing out on a pint.....that's virtually unheard of ;)  If flights weren't so expensive nowadays I'd pop over ;)

Rob - if you make it over here and are in the Yorkshire area, let me know - I figure I must owe you a drink for all the solutions re: SBS i've read of yours !!

DSL's pretty much the standard over here - or variations of.....I'm one of the lucky ones sat on the back of a leased line most days though!!

Thanks for reading the blog though - it's as much to help my shoddy memory than anything else, but it's nice when I find solutions on EE that link back to it :)

If I get to Yorkshire, I'll buy you a drink !
I was supposed to go just for a few days to meet friends from Australia for a birthday. As you say the cost of flights, especially since Canada added some heavy fuel surcharges, made it less attractive, but then work got in the way and ruled it out all together.
1000 miles isn't too bad.  : )  I will be at Niagra Fall's this summer.  That's a little bit closer to you.

Yeah, flights have been extremely high and you never know if you will make it there with your luggage.
The curse of work!  :(

Had to get some bags sent unattended in Singapore after travelling round Hong Kong and Australia last year....cost about 175 quid to get them and when they got here they weighed 10 kilos less than when we parted company.....so I tend to travel very light now!  wasn't happy   I lost loads of pretty unique souvenirs and gifts....

That sucks!  That was always my fear when I would visit my dad overseas.  He was at the embassy in Egypt and I would fly from NY to CAI (11 hours).  I always expected to be without some of the things I brought back.  Only once out of four trips did anything get broken.  Never stolen though.
<still waiting on outage window to be approved>
I am going to award points since the customer is still trying to find a window of time to bring down the internet.  I seriously can't thank you both enough for being so easy to work with and providing your expertise on this that I don't yet possess.  I learned a lot from this and was glad to work with you on it.
I really hope to stay in touch with you guys.  I am including my email address in the event I can ever help you with something.  Aaron@computerteks.org.  If I ask another network related question, I will post the link in here and if time permits, I would appreciate you checking it out.  Thanks again to you both.  Have a great weekend!

-Aaron
Thanks samiam41, and you are very welcome. The moderators will remove your e-mail address, as it is not permitted, mostly due to concerns about you getting spammed, but I will make note. You are allowed to post in your profile if you so desire. Should you need to contact me there is one in my profile.
Good luck,
Cheers !

Thanks RobWill.  Will they remove it if you and the other expert are the only ones that will see it?
Good question, I haven't run across where it is in the private comment section. Likely there is no need to remove it. Time will tell :-)
Got it and emailed you Aaron....it doesn't get removed in the private comment section, so it's all good!

Nice (e-)meeting you - will keep in touch :)

Have a great weekend chaps!!
Hahahaha!!  Figures I would have to be the one to cause the experts to say "haven't seen that before..."

Have a nice weekend as well.
