The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Creating IPSec Tunnel over static (non default route)

Asked by csuog in Networking Hardware Firewalls, IPSec Security Protocol

Tags: ASA 5510 IPSec

Hi,

My company has recently started replacing their own proprietary router/firewalls with Cisco ASAs.  On of our clients in particular has two sites connected via an IPSec tunnel.  Both sites have dual internet connections and one has an ASA and the other an ASA5505 (both with Sec+).

In terms of the ASA configuration I'd like to setup the routing table so that on each ASA the default gateway points to one Internet connection and then a static route points to the another internet connection.  The intersite IPSec connection then runs over the static routes.

The problem is that I can get the tunnel setup between the two interfaces that are setup as the default routes but I can't get the IPSec tunnel to come up between the statically routed interfaces. (ISAKMP Phase 1 doesn't even occur)  At first I thought this might be a problem related to the connections themselves but I've switched the default routes on each asa to the other internet connection and the tunnel comes up fine.

I'm kinda stumped now but I'm guessing that either its going to bes some kind of functionality restriction on the ASA or a configuration problem.  Can anyone let me know if that is the case?

If you'd like me to post the configs then please let me know.

Hopefully that makes sense but I'm happy to clarify if requried (with diagrams if necessary).

Thanks in advance for your help,
Stuart
