Question

Users cannot log on to a web site from our network

Asked by: JohnRamz

PIX 515E

This might not even be related to the firewall but I decided to post anyway. Between our users and the internet there is a router, firewall and switches. So I can only think the firewall could be causing this:

User cannot login to a webmail site (webmail.windstream.net). They get the error (Access to Windstream Webmail is denied. Error 100 ). I tested from different machines and verified it. I have an email with windstream so, I tested connecting to other 2 diferent ISP's an sure enough I am able to log in just fine.

Would you guys give me some ideas about where to look. As far was we know nothing has changed in the firewall config. It started happening since last Friday

Thanks

just as a test to find out if it is actually the firewall thats causing the problem, setup one of the PCs on your network in the DMZ of the firewall, after the PC has been added to the DMZ, attempt to access the webmail site, if you can get to the site, you'll know that it IS the firewall causing the problem, if you still cant get to the site, then it is NOT the firewall, either way, you'll want to take it out of the DMZ of the firewall once you've completed the test.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I tried from a server we have in the DMZ of the firewall and still same results. By the way, users CAN access the site BUT they cannot log in to their email. They get this error:

Access to Windstream Webmail is denied. Error 100. Attached is a screenshot

Could it be related to changes our ISP made?

best bet would be to contact windstream and find out what an Error 100 is when logging into the webmail.  That appears to be a windstream specific error message.

        Webmail - Error 100 - Outside U.S. Restrictions
        Question
I'm currently outside the U.S. and I'm getting error 100 when trying to log into webmail.

Why is this happening and how can I log into my e-mail account outside the U.S.?
        Answer
Windstream currently has restrictions in place for webmail use outside the United States. If you receive an error 100 when trying to log into our webmail server, chances are you are using an Internet connection outside the United States.

Our webmail server determines the location of your connection based on your connection IP address using ARIN's database. The American Registry of Internet Numbers (ARIN) maintains IP address information for all Internet service providers across the world.

Our access restrictions are in place due to excessive activity from spammers compromising e-mail accounts. To minimize this impact and to make our efforts in combatting unauthorized e-mail account use more effective, we have restricted only U.S. based connections to the webmail server.

If you frequently travel outside the U.S. and need access to our webmail server to check your e-mail, you will need to pursue one of two options:

    * Set up an e-mail client application i.e. Outlook Express, Thunderbird, etc.. E-mail clients use our POP3/SMTP servers directly. For a list of supported e-mail clients Windstream supports and setup instructions, click here.

      or

    * Contact our Broadband Help Desk at 1-888-292-3827, and one of our technicians will submit a request to whitelist your e-mail account. This process normally takes between 24-48 hours to be processed and completed. Our technicians may have you go to http://www2.windstream.net/myip to make sure your connection IP address isn't on a blacklisted network. After your account has been whitelisted, you should be able to use your e-mail account via webmail on any Internet connection.

DeadHeads that's a good post, however all of my users were in the U.S. Thanks for the info.

The problem solved on its own. Evidently was a Windstream issue. I contacted their support several times and they never replied.
