Question

Cant ping both ways

Asked by: moeshakir

I have a workgroup which has 4 pc s. PC1 can ping all the computers on the network but none of the computers can Ping PC1. The printer is connected to PC1, so all the other computers need access to PC1 to share the computer. There is no firewall and all the computers are in the same network.
What is blocking the PC1 to be accessed from other PC s?

Are you sure PC1 don't block ICMP reply ?  and you have like the 4 computers in a switch? not any routers/other network equipment in between..

You don't have to ping the PC1 to connect to it, just make sure NETbios is allowed trough the PC1 windows firewall (if you are using windows). it's the same for SMB in linux. for sharing printers between computers.

If you can ping from PC1 all the computers should be fine, it have to be a problem either that PC1 is stopping the others to come to it. Else there whould be a connectivity problems from the others PC's, but that should not be the case since PC1 can ping the other PC's.

It's abit hard to see what the problem is since all firewalls/services and connections are working correctly.

Are you using static IP's? are they all pointing to the same gateway and dns?

First off if its Static can you try using dhcp and see if that resolves?

No that will cause more problems, can you open command prompt and run the following command on each pc

ipconfig /flushdns

then ipconfig /all

and see if they all have the same gateway address?

by: saul2paulPosted on 2009-07-08 at 09:33:21ID: 24805565

try
nbtstat -r
this will resolve and register your netbios name.

Completely shutdown the service. Even if you have to go to services.msc and stop it from there.

by: saul2paulPosted on 2009-07-08 at 10:58:29ID: 24806406

Even I too have faced the same problem some times before.  Just you plugh off your Switch or Hub once and chek it out whether you will be able to ping or no? If yes then your problem is solved if not then Check the Netbios name of your computer which not pingng as you might have made some mistakes in giving the Netbios name of your system.

by: saul2paulPosted on 2009-07-08 at 11:02:17ID: 24806443

You cannot ping the PC1 by ip address or by system name? Tried doing an ipconfig /flushdns on your machine? Maybe dns is cached with an old address on the machine you are trying to connect with

by: WolfherePosted on 2009-07-08 at 11:59:00ID: 24806984

Is PC1 on the same network? (ie. same ip range with same gateway and same subnet). You can try adding the ip's with computer name in the hosts file. XP Home has some sharing limitations. Is simple file sharing on? On Windows XP Home, simple file sharing is on...period. There is a workaround located here: http://www.wikihow.com/Disable-Simple-File-Sharing-in-Windows-XP-Home-Edition. Once the permissions are set, reboot to normal mode.

by: moeshakirPosted on 2009-07-08 at 13:06:46ID: 24807772

I tried everything, nothing is happening. I still cant ping or share the PC1

by: aamodtPosted on 2009-07-08 at 13:09:35ID: 24807801

Have you tryed running:

netsh
firewall
show config

in CMD ?.. try that and see if something is blocked, I still think that whould be the case.. since you can access the other computers from PC1 but not the other side.

Regards Aamodt

by: aamodtPosted on 2009-07-08 at 13:11:21ID: 24807826

or maybe its that simple that no sharing is started on the PC1 computer..

or take a look on the services running to see if Netbios and such are running

by: ahmad2121Posted on 2009-07-08 at 13:11:46ID: 24807836

Its possible you have an IP conflict somewhere on your network. check the IPs of all the machines on your network.

by: moeshakirPosted on 2009-07-08 at 13:18:38ID: 24807899

Under Network connections There were two connections one was LAN and the other was 1394 connections and i disabled the 1394 connection, but nothing happend

by: moeshakirPosted on 2009-07-08 at 13:19:12ID: 24807905

I tried this and i dont see anything is blocked

netsh
firewall
show config

by: moeshakirPosted on 2009-07-08 at 13:19:53ID: 24807914

I dont see a service named "Netbios" though ?

by: moeshakirPosted on 2009-07-08 at 14:19:37ID: 24808469

Now I brought the PC and connected it to a different network on a different location. I can ping from PC1 to all the other computers but other computers cant ping this

by: aamodtPosted on 2009-07-08 at 14:48:03ID: 24808757

don't  exactually know what its called. just look in the description of the serivce. something about printer/folder sharing.

TCP/IP Netbios helper needs to be started. (on some computers that are failing on connectivity on shares)
workstation (i guess)

But this should be okey, since its default on.

by: moeshakirPosted on 2009-07-08 at 14:51:37ID: 24808789

I checked, everything looks good. This is driving me crazy, should I replace the network card?

by: ahmad2121Posted on 2009-07-08 at 14:53:28ID: 24808801

is the network card nvidia?

by: moeshakirPosted on 2009-07-08 at 15:23:40ID: 24809041

Nope, Dlink, its built in. I added a new network card and it gives me the same problem.

by: moeshakirPosted on 2009-07-08 at 17:07:11ID: 24809613

Guys! FINALLY!!
Even though I disabled all the firewalls Norton internet security was blocking it. After I completely uninstalld Norton Internet Security I was able to PING from other computers.

Thanks alot for all your expert comments.

by: WolfherePosted on 2009-07-08 at 17:39:11ID: 24809788

What version of Norton Internet Security ?

by: moeshakirPosted on 2009-07-08 at 21:45:27ID: 24810808

2005

by: WolfherePosted on 2009-07-09 at 07:56:59ID: 24814351

Yes, all the way through version 2008 I would periodically have the same problem. Version 2009 is a LOT better. Not as heavy on resources. And my shares are available consistently. I have Vista and WindowsXP home network. Sharing is just a little complicated, so having the correct firewall is important.

by: saul2paulPosted on 2009-07-09 at 08:53:27ID: 24815001

No need to uninstall norton AV just disable the Norton internet security....and u can enable your windows firewall to prevent security holes...

did u share ur printer on rest of the network?

by: moeshakirPosted on 2009-07-09 at 09:44:28ID: 24815535

Yeah i have experienced issues with Norton 2008 as well.

I did disabled it before uninstall, and it didnt work. So, then only I uninstalled it.
Yeah! I did share the printer and now all the computers can print from that Printer
