Question

trunking for vlan1

Asked by: pchmark

Hey Experts!
I need a little help with setting up a TRUNK between 2 interfaces on 1 ASA 5510. I need to setup one of my interface ports to trunk mode for vlan 1. this is so that I can setup a packet sniffer.

The current setup is 2 interfaces: interface ethernet 0/0 Vlan2 (outside) and interface ethernet 0/1 vlan1 (inside). I need to setup interface ethernet 0/2 to be a switchport of vlan1. I try to do this in the commend line, but I'm giving it the wrong command.

I've tried going into the config-if for the interface ethernet 0/2 and I can't seem to get the command right for making it a switchport. I've looked in the "?" but never saw a command relating to it. Once I can get interface etherner 0/2 a switchport of vlan 1 I can enter the  commands below and have it in trunk mode and monitor all the traffic flow.

I've done this setup before on a ASA 5505 and it was easy, but this seems to be a little more complicated firewall. If there is a better way toachieve the sniffer I need please feel free to suggest it. I'm open for new ideas.

switchport trunk allowed vlan 1
switchport mode trunk
switchport monitor ethernet0/1

For some reason it will not take it on the interface needed. remember this is not being done on a ASA 5505 this is on a ASA 5510. normaly this is no problem for the 5505 because all the ports are in a switch mode for Vlan1, but the ASA5510 ports are not.

Switchport monitor is not available on the 5510...you could use the packet capture wizard in ASDM as an alternative,

Wizards>packet capture wizard

do you have cisco switch?

by: pchmarkPosted on 2009-10-02 at 06:42:23ID: 25477748

yes we have a cisco switch, but it is just a plain 24 port not a managed one.

does the ASA just monitor with the packet capture wizard or can the traffic be forwarded to a computer?

the paxket capture wizard sends the detailed packets to your computer, but it is not real monitor...

Better way if you use mirror port the ASA port to your PC on managed switch...

better way if you implement netflow

by: pchmarkPosted on 2009-10-09 at 07:26:50ID: 25535301

Ok I tried the switch port thing, but it did not work. the ASA5510 is to my knowledge not capable of using the other ports as switch ports. I will now try to implement netflow, but one other question. Is it possible to use a linksys SRW2024 to monitor all other switch port traffic? If I can put one of the switches ports into trunk mode and forward all traffic to that port that will solve my problem. I'm not sure how to acomplish this with the SRW2024, but I've read that it can be done.

There really was no true answer to the question besides using another piece of hardware so sadly there really is no answer. ikalmar really did help me in creating a creative solution to my problem.
