The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

re: dial-up network does not detect modem

Asked by GMartin in Computer Modems, Tivoli Storage Manager

Yes, I am trying to help a friend of mine with a modem problem.  The modem installed is a Lucent Winmodem 56K which fits into a pci slot.  It passes self-diagnoistics and has its own virtual comport (COM2)and IRQ of 10.  I went and checked for possible IRQ conflicts, but, could not find any within device manager.  The modem, however, is sharing an IRQ with something that appears to be a motherboard resource called PCI Steering.  Despite the fact that Windows detects the modem and fines everything ok with it, whenever we try to set up a dial-up network to Bellsouth, we get an error message indicating No Modem Detected.

Attempts to troubleshoot this problem include the following:  1.  Removing and reinstalling modem drivers., 2. Updating the modem drivers., 3. Removing and reinstalling dial-up network along with installing a dial-up adapter and TCP/IP protocol within the Network Area of Control Panel., 4. Changing PCI slot for the modem.,
5. Deleting all comports within device manager under the category of Ports and disabling COM's in the BIOS because the mouse is a PS/2, thereby, not requiring a COM setting., and 6. Installing and testing the modem in an entirely separate computer.

After reviewing this information, as one can see, I have exhausted a variety of troubleshooting techniques.
I am still unable to get dial-up network to detect the Lucent WinModem. Any suggestions for seeking a final resolution to this modem problem will greatly be appreciated.

      Regards,

      George
