Question

System cannot open port to talk to modem

I have a Win2K laptop with a 3Com PCMCIA modem.  The system will not access the modem.  The modem is good (it works in another system) and another modem will not work in this system.  The system has a Query Modem button on the Diagnostics page from System Manager, when I select it, the message immediately appears "Couldn't open port".  I've uninstalled and reinstalled the modem several times, am absolutely stumped how to fix this.

This behavior can occur if you are using a 3Com modem to connect to the Internet and you have the 3Com port-monitoring tool installed. The tool checks the port for activity, and the tool may block the port from being used by other programs.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the modem as suggested in the KB article, no help. It seems like the system can't talk to the COM port for the modem.

Hello,

I have seen this problem before though not with the specific brand of Hardware that you mention. At that time the problem was that the Cardbus drivers for the onboard PCMCIA chip were not installed properly. Maybe the issues are similar here as well. The COM Port here is indeed the onboard PCMCIA Slot. So if the OS cannot communicate to it then it means that there is some problem with it.

I would identify the PCMCIA Slot controller on the mother board then try to install the drivers for that.

If there is the option to completely remove the COM Port from Windows, do that. Then when you reboot, Windows should automatically see your COM port and install the software for it from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.
Just make sure that at this point that PCMCIA modem is not in the PCMCIA Slot.

This should essentially reset your COM Port afresh and hopefully should see the PCMCIA Modem when you insert it later on.

Perhaps some other software is taking the port the modem is trying to use...
