I installed a modem at my house for a friend and it all worked lovley but at his house it could not find a dial tone. i have anewly installed british telecom line and he has an a british telecom line that is about 10 years old. it is set to tone dialing. The modem is a conextent 56k. Please help.

are you sure you have dial tone at that particular socket?
i recommend you plug a phone in and double check you have it. as le piaf says does it pulse or tone dial most exchanges these days are tone dial but it is a possibility.
was it external? has it been installed on his drivers etc?

You might have used the auto detect option in winodws. It may not give dial tone, if there is some difference in driver. If possible, use the modem company's driver instead.
Even if you don't get dial tone, you can dial, if the modem is working for other commands.
In windows, modem properties, you can unclick, the "Wait for dial tone before calling"
Or using a hyperterminal, ATX3DT and phone number will dial without using dial tone.

you might prefer trying pulse dial, since this is an old phone line. probably you are facing a different problem though, because you should at least get the free dial tone. make sure you are using the same adapters as the phone line needs. Unfortunately i have no clue about the standards in uk...
o by the way, when he uses his phone can he tone dial or does the phone always pulse dial?
