I've struck the same problem reported by sbarella and others mid-2004 about the Software modem on a Toshiba Tecra S1 going bung, reporting wrong configuration or port already in use (error 633). There seems to have been a trickle of subsequent chat about similar problems with other software modems also. In our case, the first and then second (now permanent) time it happened, it seemed to be triggered by loss of phone connection... either the ISP threw us out due to the problem, or the connection failed due to low speed / bad line quality and this may have caused the problem.
Q1. Does this make further sense to anyone?
Q2. Does anyone have an update on any better fix or a Toshiba recall procedure for this... does it require a hardware reinstallation or is there a software replacement (apart from driver updates which do not work)? We happen to be in Australia. I notice Toshiba is currently doing a hardware component replacement for defective memory modules but I don't know if this is it or in any way related.
Cheers
AJ
