Question

DHCP and Webstar 2100 Cable Modem Problems.

Asked by: tinkerphil

Hi,

I have just moved house and started using a different Broadband provider (Virgin).

They have provided me with a Scientific Atlanta Webstar EPC2100R2 cable modem.

I have 2 off PC's running Win XP Pro.   A Dell 1710 mono laser printer and an Oki C3300 colour laser printer.  I have a SITECOM Nexthub HD050 connecting everything together on a 10/100 network.

I install their supplied software, and I can then access the internet on this comuter ok.  However, part of the installation enables DHCP IP address resolution on my PC.  So it has changed my IP address from the 192.168.0.1 address I was using.

NOW I cannot talk to the other computer on my network, or the my printers because they are all using the 192 scheme and not my DHCP assigned IP address.

I have tried changing all other devices on the network to be DHCP enabled, but they cannot see the DHCP server for some reson.

I have tried changing back to my old 192.168.0.1 and setting the Default gateway to be the Cable Modem IP address, but it cant see it, I cant ping it, the internet, or anything.

I have tried all sorts of things, without success.

Help!

Many thanks...
Philip.

ps.  when connected to the internet now...  if I do a IPCONFIG /all it gives me...

You need to get a router, something like a Linksys BEFSR41 or if you want wireless a Linksys WRT54G or WRT300N.  You then connect your cable modem to this router, connect the HUB to the router, and then all your other devices to the HUB.

You can also install the cable modem directly to one of the PCs using USB, and share the Internet connection over the network from that PC. I would recommend you do this only until you get around to buying a router. It really is a better solution, especially if you don't want to leave one computer running so the other can access the Internet. If you do this, I would use an XP machine so you have a decent firewall. Here's some instructions. You can skip to "Using Windows XP to Connect Your Home Network to the Internet:"

Thanks og_sh0x,  I tried that already.  Even though the XP computer gets the modem on its hardware list, it is unable to communicate with it.  (ie it cant access the internet)

It cannot get a DHCP address from it...  and if I set up a manual address in the IP settings of the network card, it still cant or wont do anything.  It is SO frustrating.   I have been networking computers for the best part of 20 years and I have never come across any problem like this before.

I mean....  who would create a device that you cant configure?  Where you cant change the DHCP address range?

Meanwhile, I have purchased a Linksys BEFSR41.   I will try again when that is delivered and let you know how I got on.

Many thanks!

Philip.

The Linksys will solve your problem. The problem is that cable modems do not have a DHCP service that hands out LAN IPs. Your Linksys will be able to automatically get its WAN IP from the modem, however. As far as your USB goes, sounds like you just don't have the driver but that's irrelevant now. You're better off with the Linksys.

One of my customers just "upgraded" to this same modem.  What I noticed is that this modem once powered on will provide 192.168.x.x addresses (acting as a dhcp server when it shouldnt) for about the first 10 seconds and then will revert to getting an outside address from your internet provider and start working as a cable modem should (your IP address of 77.100.40.x is a public address provided by your ISP)

What I had to do to get theirs working was install a WRT54G wireless router. Connect it to the Webstar device via ethernet cable to the WAN port on the router and connect any wired devices to the other ports.  The Linksys will hand out 192.168.1.x addresses and you will be able to see your other computers (you may have to do an ipconfig /relelase and /renew to the other machines)

Hi all,

I bought a Linksys BEFSR41  from eBay costing me £20.  It worked a treat, many thanks.  All problems resolved now.

Many thanks again.
