Question

"remote fax did not respond in time, and the call was terminated"

Asked by: JTeceno

The setup: Microsoft SBS2003 new installation. US Robotics Courier Business Modem 56K v.92CPNT V.Everywhere V.Everything ROHS USR3453C external fax modem:. I have configured and reconfigured the modem with MS support including drivers specified by USR support.
The problem: Cannot receive faxes from outside the company. When receiving an incoming fax I can see in the fax monitor that the call is coming in and being answered but then it fails and the fax monitor message is, "The fax machine did not respond in time and the call was terminated." I can receive faxes sent from inside the company using the old fax machine connected to a phone station jack and dialing 9 first.

try resetting the modem to factory defaults. try receiving again.

Unfortunately, that modem is not on the Hardware Compatibility list for Windows Server 2003.

The only USR Modem that I've had success with is the USR5610C (or USR5610B if you happen to find one of those still around).

I use the very same modem on another SBS 2003 server at one of my other clients and it works fine.

However, at another client I have a new SBS 2003 R2 server that I am having the same issue "did not resond in time"

Harry Brelsford of SBS nation specifically recommends the V everything modems for SBS.

by: TechSoEasyPosted on 2008-09-30 at 08:35:35ID: 22606361

While Harry does recommend the v.everything modem in his book, he unfurtunately doesn't specify whether it should be an INTERNAL or EXTERNAL model. I've never seen an external modem that actually works in the long-term on an SBS. Some will start out fine, but usually fail without any notice.

You aren't the only person to have experienced this, and you aren't the only person to have stated that "Harry Brelsford" recommended it.

I'm sorry to say that even though he may have, Microsoft doesn't, and he doesn't speak for Microsoft.

I will actually be seeing Harry this weekend, so I'll advise him of the issue (if he isn't already aware).

Any word back from Harry?

I counted the number of SBS clients we have who are all currently using the V Everything (External) modem and we have 18 clients all using the same setup. Some for almost 5 years the rest between 1-4 years.

The one I am researching now is the only one not working,

Yes I have verified it is setup the same as the other ones who are working! :)

My Bad...

I believe I responded to an email that my questino had a comment. I had the same type of issues and my question was almost identical.

Try upgrading the firmware.

by: vtsincPosted on 2008-11-21 at 09:54:24ID: 23015356

I had the same nagging issue.  Turns out the fix for a 3453C for me was to download and apply the latest firmware from USR's site, and to also use the USR driver and not the Microsoft built in driver.

Both firmware and driver are available at USR:
http://www.usr.com/support/product-template.asp?prod=3453c

While these modems may not be on the HCL I have installed and used them successfully on several servers with the USR driver installed.
