Modem newbie question

I purchased a laptop with Vista Home Premium which does not include Windows Fax as that feature is unavailable in that edition of Windows Vista. I purchased a laptop with modem in it and I was debating purchasing 3rd party fax software to do faxing, but I also had a problem figuring out if the modem was capable of faxing.

I contacted HP the computer mfg whom I purchased the system from and they ran through a slew of Vista Home does not include faxing. This made me a little uneasy because I began the conversation by stating that I was aware that Vista Home did not offer fax support. After going through the motions the tech I spoke to seemed to give up and just said no the modem would not perform faxing so I felt that he just didn't know.

Cutting to the chase, is any RJ11 modem capable of faxing or do I have to ensure I have a fax capable modem? My understanding of a modem is one that does dial up connections, and faxing. I have used and installed US Robotics modems for faxing on servers but other than that I have little or no education of such hardware. Having said that I need to be schooled a little in modems, so I am hoping someone can provide me a brief "this is how it is" run down. Thanks in advance.

PS, any one know of any FREE good fax software? I have googled a bit and the only thing I can find people like seems to be Snappy Fax but it cost money.
