Question

Which adsl modem to use infront of a sonicwall tz100 firewall

Asked by: Tricky1974

Can anyone give a brief bit of advice?
I have a sonicwall TZ100 firewall and was hoping to us a netgear dg834g modem router infront of it but it would seem that this modem can not be made 'transparent' and act just as a modem. I am no expert at this side of things but from what i can see this modem just isnt going to do what i want it to do.
The firewall will be used for vpn connections so needs to have a static IP address (the adsl line does have a static address).
Can anyone suggest which modem i should use for this, or if the one i have will do the job?

Regards

Will

Hello,

Your DG834G is a router with adsl modem integrated. No way to configure it to act like a simply modem.
You should configure your TZ 100 WAN Interface to use a static IP in the same subnet of the DG834G LAN interface (by default 192.168.0.0/24). For example 192.168.0.254.
You must configure DG834G to use a default DMZ server (see configuration WAN section on admin panel) and you specify the TZ 100 WAN interface address. With this DG834G let pass all traffic coming from internet to the TZ 100 : be careful !

Regards.

thanks for your information, i think by the sound of it this isnt going to be the best modem for the job. Can you suggest a better modem?
i think the netgear dg834 might do the job but i havent seen much in the spec for it, but i am sure someone i know has used one for the same purpose before.

Hello,

DG834G is not a modem but a router with a modem integrated (sorry for my poor english ^^)
If you check the DMZ option in DG834G panel configuration, it will let your Sonicwall establish or not all incoming connexions : the firewall job and the VPN server job.

You have a lot of router between your vpn server and the vpn client. In this configuration you just insert an another router and create a DMZ network.

WAN (internet) <-> DMZ (192.168.0.0/24) <-> LAN (your local network)
Interfaces:
VPN client -> WAN Interface of the DG834G <-> LAN Interface of DG834G <-> WAN interface of TZ100 <-> LAN interface of TZ100 <- Servers and PC on your LAN

Il you don't want the DMZ network, you should buy any PPPoE modem like the Netgear DM111P in bride mode or D-Link DSL-320B that have both RJ45 interface.
I think your adsl provider could OFFER you a true modem too...

Regards.

To all, i posted this question on the netgear site too and the guru there gave a very simple answer to the issue, Yes, the dg834 range of modem routers can (if you are lucky, some dont work in this way!) be turned into just a modem. You just need to log onto the router admin start page and then change the address where it says start to mode. This will give you a secret screen that gives you teh option to change the function of the modem. How nice and easy is that! sometimes life is good!!.
Thanks all for the help that was offered, but this was the real answer that i was after.
Regards
