Question

D-Link Remote Management setup

Asked by: josephdaviskcrm

I have a D-Link DI-523 router.  I want to activate remote management so that I can access the GUI interface and configure it from anywhere.  I toggled remote management on and set the port to 8080.  When I try to access the socket "my IP address:8080" it shows that the host is not reachable through IE.  But I can ping the IP address.  Any suggestions?

Try using port 80.

Are you actually using the Broadband IP-Address ? Remember that this setting is for remote management, thus on the WAN side of your network. 192.168....:8080 will NOT work.

Furthermore, some SoHo routers will not handle incoming requests for the WAN port from the LOCAL network: you'll have to test it from a remote connection. I know, it's not easy ...

Here is the deal. I have a utility that I use that I can grab the external address of my router.  It is located at http://www.orangeshadow.com/util/ip.php.  If you go to this URL, the external address will automatically be displayed in the browser window, and that is the address that I am using.  Furthermore.  I have a cable connection coming to my house which my router is connected to.  In order to simulate accessing the router remotely over the WAN, I connect to my neighbors unencypted wireless network and attempt the remote connection from that remote network.

When I switched the port to port 80, it started working.  But my concern is that I want to reserve port 80 for http traffic.  I eventually plan on making the computer into a web server.

I suggest using realvnc on you pc at home that way you are not passing your router password unencrypted across the cable sustem which is a bus and can be snooped.  although some routers allow for https access for remote admin.

Well, then, I've only 2 remaining ideas:
 - I assume the router have been rebooted in the meanwhile (it's always good to reboot ;-) )
 - try with https if you were not. Some routers only accept https for remote management, while still responding with http on port 80

Not much more ideas right now, sorry.

Rgds,
Werner.

More than likely your ISP is blocking access to 8080. Can you set it to any other port?
