Question

Intel 3945ABG fails to work

Asked by: rebane

On my Dell D620 i have recently (after installing new windows xp)  run into problems with wireless network card.

This network card fails just after few hours of usage, the drivers get unloaded and wireless will be disabled.
Event viewer is full of events:
1) Event 5002
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection : Has determined that the adapter is not functioning properly.
2) Event 5005
\DEVICE\{BD9878AB-0AA2-4837-B4CC-A4A72821CB4F} : Has encountered an internal error and has failed.

And one more error when drivers get unloaded - i currently dont have this in my event log.

The driver version is: 11.1.0.86 and it is downloaded from support.dell.com and i know this hardware has worked with these drivers.
At first i thought it had something to do with Dell's bios update but bios downgrade did not solve the problem.

I changed my wireless card and the drivers on the dell site were useless.  I tried intel and there were later updates there, (which worked for me) so it may help you to visit intel and update the 3945ABG drivers.  Try ... http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2259 where the current latest is 11.1.1.11

Thats exactly i just did recently.
Now i have new drivers and new intel software. The errors have changed a bit but the result is the same. Wireless card gets unloaded sometimes.

And event viewer logs these messages:

The description for Event ID ( 5002 ) in Source ( NETw4x32 ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: ; \DEVICE\{E17953A2-3F35-4B80-BB9C-1A0A783BD595}.

Then it's all a bit too much for me!  Assuming you have made the installations as an 'administrator' then I would see what happens with the old card.  After that and on the assumption that there is a hard fault, with the new card ... i'd try another one - assuming I could find a card that I can borrow.  In the meantime converting from the old card back to the new one may cure the problem .... after all everyone knows retrying software a second time around solves all known problems!

Apologies for the lack of help
Chris

After 2 days with new intel drivers this NETw4x32 Event is not so common int event viewer. But now i have information messages from Tcpip (Event 4201) and the description:

The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\............ was connected to the network and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.

And this is logged about every 20 sec : )
It is going really weird. Could this really be faulty hardware?!

I think i should point out that i used Windows Vista previously. I remember problems with wireless on windows vista also, but then i accused vista and didn't think it could be some other problem : )
