Asked by: sazukaChan

I would like to set up a remote desktop connection from my main computer to my labtop , so that I can control my main computer with my labtop.  I am a novice with this and I am having difficulty doing this.  A some what clear explanation would be nice.

Both computers run Windows XP Home edition with service pack 2.  One has a wireless connection and the other lan.  Both are connected through the same hub.

How do I establish a remote desktop connection between the two computers?  Thanks.

Sure this isn't too bad.  I use my desktop and loptop this way a lot and the functionality is nice.

1st you have to set up your desktop to accept remote connections.

Make sure you have a username and password that you know on at least one account.
It'll be required in order to remote connect (you can't connect to an account with no password).

On your desktop:
After that right click on "My Computer" and click properties.
Click on the "Remote" tab.
Make sure "Allow users to connect remotely to my computer" is checked.

On your laptop, go to start->programs->accessories->communications->remote desktop connction

then, you just have to put in the ip of your desktop, and click connect.  If you use it alot, you can save the connection as a shortcut on your laptop's desktop and connect easily.

You can save your username and pass in the connection or it can prompt you everytime.

If you need to get the ip of your desktop follow these steps.

Start->run->cmd
On the command line type: ipconfig

your ip should then be listed.

Thanks.  You made that very clear.  I'll have to try that a little later tonight when I got some time to experiment.  :).

I followed your stepsexactly (melink14),  and made sure that Remote Assistanace was enabled, and I keep getting this error:

---------
Remote Desktop Disconnected

The client could not connect to the remote computer.

Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections.  It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection.

Please try connecting again later.  If the problem continues to occur, contact your administartor.

My dad does have our network set up to only allow certian IP addresses to our wierless network hub.  Both computers are granted access.  I disabled Zonelabs and enabled Windows XP Home edition firewall.

Am I missing a step here?

You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to computers running certain Windows versions.Windows XP Home Edition is one of them.

You may want to consider some 3rd party software such as VNC which has a free version. Below is the URL to VNC

http://www.realvnc.com/

The concept is similar to PC Anywhere. You cannot use Remote Desktop to connect so you use the VNC software on one PC to allow connections (VNC Server) and the other PC uses VNC viewer to connect to the machine.

by: WatchoutMacPosted on 2007-07-07 at 20:32:39ID: 19439106

As a side note VNC runs on port 5900 so you will need to allow access to this port from your firewall.

Good Call, sorry about that. I considered checking but then decided not to because I didn't think microsoft would cripple it that much.

I second VNC.
