My laptop has suddenly developed a network connection fault. See end of question re: power and blue screen
symptoms:
network 'cable unplugged' message
media 'disconnected message' in ipconfig
the wireless connection has also failed with same message
I have another laptop connected on same network with no problems
I have also tried these things:
1. swapped cables with working laptop - problem stays with the faulty laptop - so NOT a cable OR a router probem.
2. re-installed NIC driver
3. re-booted
4. set NIC to 10mps half duplex rather than auto detect
5. done a ping local host - works fine
[ all these gleaned from previous postings]
Other important background.
1. a power outage [10 minutes] has ocurred between last use and problem - so probably (?) a source. I would think laptops are immune frompower problems since they carry on going when power goes off.
Machine was probably hibernating
2. Blue screen of death sayiing a device or driver has failed was showing when I got to the machine - COULD have been there prior to outage - not sure.
3. XP reports that NIC is working OK - Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCIEGigabit NIC.
Any ideas?
