About 7-8 out of 30 PC's on our Win2003 network have lost their network connections this morning.
We are able to ping the loopback address on the affected computers, but we can't ping any IP's on the internal private network or external addresses. The link light on the network adapter is solid. Tried running repair on the Local Area Connection, but IP renewal failed. Link lights on the network switch for these systems appear to be active.
We took the network cable from a working PC and connected it to a problem PC, but still were not able to get a network connection on the problem PC. But then, when we reconnected the cable back to the original, working PC, the network connection was lost!
The DNS log on the server does not show any entries at all for the past week.
This is a new office space with CAT6 cable installed throughout, although the network adapters on the PC's may not be gigabit capable.
I am troubleshooting remotely, therefore I'm completely reliant on the non-IT staff onsite to carry out my instructions. I do have access to the server, but I can't remote in to any of the workstations.
I though about having them go through some of the services that are running to amke sure nothing is missing. I've also thought about rebooting the server, but I don't want to risk having everyone lose their connection.
I don't know what to try next...any ideas?
