The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Content Filtering Appliance
Hi,

i am after some opinions if i may - I have a Private IP managed network which incorporates about 100 Sites. The PIX in our COLO acts as the gateway for all traffic in and out of our network.

I am looking for a content filtering solution similar to ISA, that can sit on an appliance (I know ISA can but at this stage we are looking at alternatives)...Basically i want the device to sit on the inside of our firewall, and do all the filtering as traffic goes out....URL control is the biggest thing for us

Ideally, the device (If possible) can control site access based on network source - so for example, traffic from a certain subnet can have certain rules applied to it, i would like to avoid having to manage users and groups within the device, and considering our AD centralisation isnt complete, LDAP integration doesnt really help either..

Any ideas on what device out there will achieve what i am asking.....cost is of course a consideration and it will need to support around 1000 users

We use a software based filter called SmartFilter:
http://www.securecomputing.com/index.cfm?skey=85
It works in conjunction with our PIX and is configurable to user/machine level.

Barracuda is an e-mail filter, which can filter spam inbound or outbound from your network. What you need is a Websense setup. You can integrate it with the PIX and the PIX will send all approval requests to the websense server. This would be the preferred configuration in my opinion. Otherwise you can put the Websense server on a mirrored port in line between the PIX and your LAN and it will intercept, log and abort any connections to websites you don't approve of. Regardless of whether you use it in line manually, or integrated with your PIX, websense is the best solution for this really.

You can also try untangle its an open source content filter which can be installed in any PC and can be placed either before or after PIX , please go thro the below link for more details,

Websense is probably the way forward, but it costs, and depending how much integration to your existing infrastructure you can implement will depend on how successful it is.  It is possible to block and allow websites with Websense without using LDAP, you just create a default policy that has restrictions to the sites you do not want your users to access.  What happens with the Activity logging will be interesting though.

Another alternative is Bloxx -.www.bloxx.com , it is an appliance, and from the little experience I have with it, you should also be able to block users using a restrictive policy with no Ldap integration.  You can if necassary create users on the box, or simply join it to your Active Directory (even those this is not complete it would surely be a preferred solution).

You can use Websense to block and allow from specific subnets (even down to IP address), I am not sure if this is possible with Bloxx.
