Is the command "switchport nonegotiate" necessary if the port is an access port?

Hi Experts,

Quick one..If a port on my switch is an access port and is connected to another access port, is it necessary to have the command "switchport nonegotiate" on the switch? I would think that is only needed if the ports are a trunk port.

As long as both ports are set for no-negotiate and their speeds and duplex match your all set.

"switchport nonegotiate" has nothing to do with speed and duplex.  The command just surpresses DTP packets which can cause unnecessary overhead. I'm just wondering that if the port is set as an ACCESS port, it won't send it send DTP frames, correct? thus, no need for "switchport nonegotiate" anways.

Your correct if you set the port to "switchport access" it will not send DTP frames

Dear Author,

You yourself ask the question and answer it also. You are very correct. If you give command "switchport nonegotiate", it will not send any DTP frames.

However if  your other end is ACCESS port, anyway it's not going to form a trunk in either case. So answer to your question is, it is not required to give command "switchport nonegotiate" if other end is Access port. That way you can reduce traffic by eliminating DTP frames.
