The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

QoS Settings on a Cisco ASA for VoIP remote phones

Asked by ascendtech in Networking Hardware, Networking Hardware Firewalls, Network Routers

Tags: Cisco ASA 5505 needing specific priority tagging

We have 2 locations on our recent VoIP deployment. The VoIP system is an ESI-50 Communications Server (www.esi-estech.com) running at a corporate location and 3 remote VoIP phones running about 20 miles down the street. Both ISP's are Cbeyond Communications with the main location running 3.0 bonded T-1's and the remote branch running a single 1.5 T-1. There are live and active VPN's running on the Cisco ASA but bandwidth seems to be reasonable availability even with VPN's, browsing, etc. Our problem is that the remote phones are perfect about 75%of the time and the other 25%, there quality makes them unusable. We are simply looking for the best QoS settings on a Cisco ASA. I am the telephony vendor, but the customer has a managed services provider so I have no control over the ASA's to play around. I have to simply get it right the first go around and send the recommendation to the network vendor to apply to the ASA routers.

Here are the details on my ESI Communications Server VoIP platform: we use UDP port 59101 specifically for all VoIP traffic on both sides (main and remote). Knowing this, I am looking for any of the following QoS options or somethign different if we have missed it altogether. The listed options below are based on other routers we have used successfully and their settings.

1. Specific port prioritization for UDP port 59101. This option seems the most granular and best.
2. Specific LAN port prioritization and we can plug the IP card at corporate and phones at remote into those ports. Problem with this is we use pass through ports for the computer so this may not be a valid option for the remote branch.
3. Prioritization by IP address that is being passed through the Cisco ASA including the VoIP card at corporate and each IP phone at the remote branch.
