Fortigate 60 max users

Hello !

We have a network of about 50 users and many of them use Vmware / Virtual pc so the number of computers that are connected is about 90.

How many computers can the Fortigate 60 handle ?, lately users have complained about network slowdown and freezing when they use RDP / Citrix to external computers. When i ping the fortigate i get packet loss, i Check the switch for high traffic but it is normal or low traffic when this happens.
So i have a feeling that it is the Fortigate that cannot take it, the CPU usage is about 10% and Memory Usage is 54%, Sessions 1617 current sessions.



Additional info :  The Internet connection is a 40Mbit Fibre

Hi,

The fortigate 60 has a limit of Concurrent sessions: 50, 000. Your memory usage is also acceptable and so is the CPU load. What does the log say? Do you have a firewall analyzer installed at your premises?

Yeah, pushing 50+ users through a 60 might be pushing it a bit... here are the basic performance numbers on a 60:

System Performance
Concurrent sessions 50,000
New sessions/second 2,000
Firewall throughput (Mbps) 70
168-bit Triple-DES throughput (Mbps) 20

The memory and CPU, as uetian1707 pointed out, are well within acceptable ranges, but you may be maxing out the throughput, which won't necessarily show on memory and CPU.

If you look on the System/Status page, you can click Add Content, and add Traffic History.  If your traffic history is near or above 70Mbps, then you're maxing out.

Where can i measure the New sessions / second ?

You can't really see the real time sessions per second, but if you click History on the System resources add on on the status screen, it will show you the session History that can be set to update every minute.  Hopefully that will help some.

Thnx for help, i am now able to monitor when the network freeze / hangs, i have seen some spikes above 50Mbit and up to 70Mbit and i then got packet loss, so its time to upgrade the Fortigate and maybe the Internet connection.
