Question

Dell PowerConnect 5424 inter-VLAN routing

Asked by: nbccit

I am planning to restructure my corporate network.  I plan to use the PowerConnect 5424 switch that we own to create 3 VLANs, each with its own subnet.  The switch will be connected directly to one of the firewall interfaces.  I want each VLAN to be able to access the internet and also communicate with each other  Is this possible with this hardware?
I have already found this article: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Networking_Hardware/Switches/Q_23828140.html , but the OP had the freedom to choose different (more suitable) hardware.  So, I am unclear about whether the configuration suggestions will work.
I'd appreciate any help!  Thanks.

How many users do you have? I looked at the specs of this switch, and it isn't a true layer 3 switch however it does do intervlan routing from the looks of it so it may work in your case. The configuration provided in the link above should make for a decent start.

Thanks, mikecr.  Where did you see that it does inter-vlan routing?  I have looked a great deal, and i can't seem to find anything explicit.
Yes, i do think the config given makes for a good start.  But, i am wondering about step 4 in particular: 4. configure your firewall to know how to reach networks from vlans.
What i understand that to mean:  configure the firewall interface with 3 IP schemes, one for each VLAN.  I assume the cable will connect the firewall interface to a port in one of the VLANs, and that the switch will manage traffic from a different VLAN to use that port.  Does that port traffic need to be tagged to facilitate the NAT?
Hmm....i guess i had a few questions. :)

I apologize, I was looking at the wrong PDF file. It does not do any intervlan routing and is just a layer two switch. You can assign IP addresses to each vlan but I'm not sure the meaning behind it since you can't route between them.

What type of firewall do you have? How many users are on your corporate network?

<sigh> I was getting hopeful.
The firewall is a Sonicwall 2040.  We have about 70 users.

Well, you can trunk the port on the 5424 to the Sonic Wall if you wish. The Sonic Wall supports up to 100 virtual interfaces, however each one would require it's own IP address and all of your work would be done on the firewall in respect to configurations and allowing each subnet outbound access. From a manageability standpoint it could get a little ugly but it would work.

You wouldn't happen to have any type of budget set aside for something like this would you?
