The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Many small hubs on the network

Asked by ROUTEPRO in Networking Hardware

Hi there,

We have a new client that has a main 24 port switch. Yesterday they were having network problems where some computers would not renew their IP Address. I checked the DHCP server and everything was fine. By moving from one port to a different port on the switch, after a few seconds the workstation got an IP. So I tought the switch had a bad port but the same problem happened after we got a new 24 port switch.

Going over the connections we found out that the client had 14 small 4 port hubs/switches on the network. Every time that they wanted to add a new device on the network, they added another little hub.

The temporary solution was to reboot all the little switches since the problem takes a while to show up again.

I'm pretty sure that this was the cause of the problem, probably a bat little hub/switch. We already told the client to remove all the little switches and run new cable drops.

So my question is:
What are the problems that a network like this is going to have.
Does the traffic multiply by having multiple hubs?
After replacing the main 24pt switch, it took about 1 day for the problem to reappear. Was the 24pt switch being flooded?

If they had just 2 or 3 little hubs, would that also be a concern?

I want to understand the pitfalls of having a network like this.

Thank you all.
