We are using an
EQUINOX SST-4P/RJ

and

 SST-8P/RJ

At several of my locations i cant tell you the exact distance but we are running at least over 100ft im not sure what the limitations are for the hardware.

I noticed you said windows xp both of those devices were running on windows 2000 and they are now running on win2k3 since we upgraded all of our servers and we put win2k3 on them. The drivers for win2000 should work on windows xp. The printers we are using are TM88IV with a sr232 adapter.

RS232 is easy can be converted to RS422/485- up 1000 feet.
There is a lot of wireless solution for it as well, just google by "RS232....RS485 converters", using same cable.
RS422/485 is native solution, and a lot of RS232 devices, can have option sent it out RS485, not just RS232.
CAT5 extenders, is a substitution , and therefore can not be expected work perfectly well in some situations.
I tryed back 8 years, using RS232 go up 100 Feet(not suppose to), it seems to work, never try 150 feet.
But if there is no interference around, and you use 18/3 wire, you can try , and see if it will work.
