Question

Cisco 7940 - Stopped working "Protocol Application Invalid"

Asked by: gisvpn

Hello,

I have a Cisco 7940 phone which was configured to use a SIP VOIP provider (voipfone.co.uk) and worked great for just under a year and it has suddenly stopped working.

When the phone boots up now it say...
........ Configuring VLAN
........ Configuring IP
Then says "Protocol Application Invalid" (see image below)...

It is strange as this is the first time I have seen this error and the phone was working fine before for ages. I have a small office set up which uses a switch and Netgear DG843G router (which is also acts as a DHCP server).

I have tried a factory reset (which it responds to) and it restarts but keeps appearing with the same error message.

Any ideas on what I may be able to do to get the phone working ?

Thanks,

GISVPN

Check these link out to see if they help:

I would try to go through the procedures to upgrade image on the phone to see if that helps.  The info on doing this can be found here:

humm that does not sound great !. I dont have too much knowledge of upgrading Cisco and by looking at the links you have provided it sounds like a quagmire of complicated technical procedures !.

I may read up on the basics and attempt a reload of the firmware !

Thanks,

Hi Gisvpn

i've recently set up a new cisco 7960 on the voipfone.co.uk network, and i can tell you it's really not as hard as it sounds for flashing the fimware, there are some threads on the voipfone forums about it here: http://www.voipfoneuserforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2252

one of the members also posted a complete step-by-step guide of starting a tftp server, acquiring and editing the config files, and flashing them to the phone, the guide can be found here: http://public.servright.co.uk/Voipfone_Cisco_79xx_Guide/

let us know how it goes!

Hi TechForce,

Thanks for the post. I had seen these useful links previously while trying to search the internet for help. The problem I think I have is that I cannot do step 5 in the second link you posted (the phone flashing guide) because the phone is locked on the screen in the picture above and for that reason I dont think the phone is talking to the TFTP server :-/

Thanks again for the links however and post !.

ahh, makes sense! can't point the phone to the tftp server without going through the on-screen config. i'll keep searching around and let you know what i come up with :)

Try doing the factory reset as mentioned in some of the links I sent you  see if that will get it out of that mode.

by: gisvpnPosted on 2009-09-19 at 16:27:25ID: 25375205

hi thanks for the post, you might have missed in the original post that i have tried this and it did not resolve the problem.

given this do you know what the tftp factory setting is ?

thanks,

by: TechForcePosted on 2009-09-19 at 16:30:02ID: 25375216

i'm sure the defaults are set up for cisco callmanager.

by: gisvpnPosted on 2009-09-19 at 16:34:11ID: 25375235

with the factory reset would it specify a tftp address or assume an tftp address from the ip settings it gets from the dhcp server ?

by: TechForcePosted on 2009-09-19 at 16:42:48ID: 25375274

from cisco:

Reset the 7940 and 7960 IP Phones to the Factory Default

In order to perform a factory reset of a phone if the password is set, complete these steps:

   1.

Unplug the power cable from the phone, and then plug in the cable again.

The phone begins its power up cycle.
   2.

Immediately press and hold # and while the Headset, Mute, and Speaker buttons begin to flash in sequence, release #.

The Headset, Mute, and Speaker buttons flash in sequence in order to indicate that the phone waits for you to enter the key sequence for the reset.
   3.

Press 123456789*0# within 60 seconds after the Headset, Mute, and Speaker buttons begin to flash.

If you repeat a key within the sequence, for example, if you press 1223456789*0#, the sequence is still accepted and the phone resets.

If you do not complete this key sequence or do not press any keys, after 60 seconds, the Headset, Mute, and Speaker buttons no longer flash, and the phone continues with its normal startup process. The phone does not reset.

If you enter an invalid key sequence, the buttons no longer flash, and the phone continues with its normal startup process. The phone does not reset.

If you enter this key sequence correctly, the phone displays this prompt:

      Keep network cfg? 1 = yes 2 = no
   4.

In order to maintain the current network configuration settings for the phone when the phone resets, press 1. In order to reset the network configuration settings when the phone resets, press 2.

If you press another key or do not respond to this prompt within 60 seconds, the phone continues with its normal startup process and does not reset. Otherwise, the phone goes through the factory reset process.

so it appears you can set it to keep its network configurations, or can reset it to the default, i'm still trying to dig around atm to see what the defaults are set at.

by: gisvpnPosted on 2009-09-19 at 16:48:13ID: 25375293

great thanks, i have tried both options both 1 and 2 but neither seemed to work :(

by: TechForcePosted on 2009-09-19 at 16:50:26ID: 25375306

did you have to tftp the settings to the phone to point it at the voipfone network when you first got it? or did you config it all through the lcd screen?

by: gisvpnPosted on 2009-09-19 at 16:52:57ID: 25375320

i did it all through the screen when i first got it

by: TechForcePosted on 2009-09-19 at 17:15:30ID: 25375381

ah bummer! i was hoping it would have been via tftp and would have kept them same ip settings for a tftp server.

i'm at a bit of a loss for this atm. i've found some information but it all relates to cisco callmanager or asterisk.

take a look at :
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps556/products_tech_note09186a008055c1fe.shtml

have a looksie at the solution under the background info, to get the DHCP option in your administrative tools you'll need:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?FamilyID=c16ae515-c8f4-47ef-a1e4-a8dcbacff8e3&displaylang=en

then you should hopefully be able o follow the instructions and point your phone to a tftp server that way.

there are some other steps, hopefully just setting the dhcp to automatically point the phone at the tftp server will work.

absolutely no idea if this has any chance of working! but it's worth a go.

good luck mate

I think what happened is the firmware got corrupted and now the phone is dead.  I did a log of looking on voip-info and what you are seeing is the message that gets displayed once the phone turns into a paper weight.  Are you able to get the prompt as to whether or not it wants to keep the current config?  I am guessing you that you are not when you do the factory reset procedure.  I think the phone is not loading far enough along to get you there.

by: gisvpnPosted on 2009-09-20 at 01:54:38ID: 25376352

Hi Techforce : thanks for the other links, I'll see if I can get anything to happen with the phone. I'll post back if I have any luck.

Hi kenboonejr : Thanks also for the post, there are a few posts where I have mentioned I have tried the factory reset. I do see the options 1 and 2 and I have tried both. I tried option 2 (keep settings) first as I knew they were fine because it had been working for ages without a problem with the settings it had and then tired 1, however neither worked. It does however respond in the normal way and appears to work fine when doing this process.

Thanks for the help, if anyone has anything to add, pleae do ;)

So once you try option 1, can you configure the network settings.  I am guessing probably not.  If not, then you need to figure out where it thinks the tftp server is set too.  You can do this with a sniffer and figure out what address it is trying to pull from.  Then you can load that particular tftp server with another set of image files to see if it will pull it down.

by: gisvpnPosted on 2009-09-20 at 11:11:53ID: 25378273

Hi kenboonejr, I will try the above for sure, would it be possible to check with you if every Cisco phone will always check for a TFTP server or are there conditions to be met before it will have an address for an TFTP server to go on ? Im thinking that I have reset the phone with the default factory settings what will the TFTP server address be by default or will it be blank ?

Thanks,

GISVPN

by: kenboonejrPosted on 2009-09-20 at 12:44:37ID: 25378655

It doesn't default to anything as far as I know.  It relies on this being hard coded or this option being received from dhcp.  So if you set it to dhcp, you can define option 150 on your dhcp server to assign the ip address of your tfto server

by: TechForcePosted on 2009-09-20 at 13:32:51ID: 25378832

yep, thats what the administrative tools and the link above i posted will show you, it will push the code 150 to a tftp server that you can specify.

Good news !.. the phone is reimaged and working perfectly !.. Firstly I am not sure why the problem occured in the first place and the reimage was a little tricky but for the purposes of this post the reimage worked !..

For reference there is another post linked to this one : http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Telecommunications/IP_Telephony/VoIP/Q_24745989.html

Thanks for everyones help in getting this sorted !..
