Question

Small network problems with Internet Explorer

Asked by: wilson175

I have a two computer network with the host running Win XP and the client running Win 98. The are networked through a Dlink DI-604 and the host is running fine-able to connect to the internet and view websites on Explorer. The client computer is currently using IE 5.0 and is able to ping the router and ping websites like yahoo.com by IP address only. When I try to ping yahoo by DNS, I get the unable to locate host message. The browser gets the "page cannot be displayed" message whether the address is entered by name or IP. I have tried the Miscrosoft KB and checked for multiple entries of the winsock files but didn't find any. I am not a computer expert so bear with me, I don't know what other information you might need to troubleshoot this but will try to provide anything else that would be helpful.

On the WIn98 system, go into TCP/IP properties, and add this IP address as a nameserver, and delete any others that are there:
198.6.1.2

by: wilson175Posted on 2003-01-22 at 14:45:24ID: 7786483

I went to TCP/IP properties but I'm not clear on where to enter this IP address. There are several tabs for Wins/DNS Config/Net Bios etc. but I'm not sure where to add this entry. As I said I'm not a computer expert so you'll have to be specific for me...Thanks

DNS tab and add it there with the Add button to list of dns/name servers.
Sorry, I don't have 98 here, but you're really close.

Ok, I added the Ip address and I can now ping yahoo by name as well as by IP address. However, I still get the "page cannot be displyed" message on the browser. The LAN browser connection settings under Internet Options are all unchecked (Automatically Detect settings/Use Auto Config Script/Use Proxy Server)All other setting in Internet Options are set to default.

by: yunetPosted on 2003-01-22 at 20:22:06ID: 7788518

Under Internet Option LAN Settings choose Automatically Detect settings. Close browser and open it again. That shall do.

Tried Yunet's suggestion to choose Auto Detect settings under LAN in Internet Options but it did not work. I have Firewall and Antivirus software on the host computer that I have disabled while trying to set up this network but was wondering if it might still be causing the problem. Any other ideas?

by: lrmoorePosted on 2003-01-23 at 07:01:09ID: 7791957

I believe it very well could be the firewall software on the host. Even temporarily disabling it does not usually change the rule sets. Even uninstalling it can sometimes leave residual registry entrys that can cause this. What firewall? Zone Alarm? Other?

by: wilson175Posted on 2003-01-23 at 08:31:45ID: 7792827

I'm away from that computer right now but I believe it is Norton Internet Security which is the firewall and antivirus programs together. I set it up prior to installing the router so I wonder if it may be causing a problem.

DO I gather that you running ICS on your 'host' for your 'client'?
Wouldn't it be easier to have both your machines accessing the Internet directly through your router?
In this event your router becomes your default gateway for both machines.

I guess your existing problem is that the 'client' machine is getting confused about the default gateway (and probably the DNS server too) that is being allocated by the ICS which should be your 'host' rather than the router in this situation.
Check this with ipconfig /winipcfg on the client.

You may have to set up your client machine manually - IP Address, Default Gateway ('host') and DNS Server (the one on your ISP not just any one).

by: wilson175Posted on 2003-01-23 at 09:13:05ID: 7793161

I believe I am running ICS on the host. The setup I have was through the Dlink router setup program and through their tech support. Tech support stated that the setup was fine since the client was accessing the internet by name as well as IP address. I'm willing to try a different setup if you can be more specific about how to do it and are willing to get me back to where I was if it doesn't work. This is my first venture into networking, so I'm learning as I go.

by: nomorefuzzylogicPosted on 2003-01-23 at 10:41:05ID: 7793795

Sorry I didn't notice the client could ping by IP address. That means your routing is fine - its just the DNS server settings that are adrift.

On the client:-
First do an ipconfig in a DOS command window and check if there is a DNS server specified, check the address - it should be the one on your ISP and I guess its not.
If you go into network properties on the client you can set the DNS server (if all this doesn't work you can just go back in and change it back again) to be the one on your ISP. If you don't know the address then do an ipconfig on the 'host' machine because that sounds as though its set correctly because it can ping by name - right?

If this all fails then do an ipconfig on both the host and client (if you pipe this to a file -- ipconfig >host.txt) you can then open the file host.txt, and copy and paste the text into your next message). That'll give us a clue.

Once we get pinging by name working using the correct DNS server we can do something about the IE page not found problem - check for any error code it might give on the IE window - usually 3 digits (ie 404 Page not found).

Ok, I think I see the problem but first can you tell me what kind of internet conection are you using and is it DSL or cable through modem or router?

Can you post the example of modem-router setting?
Also setting of DI-604 router?

The 2 computers are win XP and one is win 98 ?

You should not have any manual settings inside your tcp-ip property, unless you specified both routers not to use DHCP.

The connection shall be simple one:

In Router-Modem received by your ISP do not modify anything. Write down the IP address of that modem and its subnet (Sometime referred as Network address). Make sure DHCP is enabled, NAT and firewall is disabled.

Next take network cable and connect ISP router to DI-604 router WAN port.

Next, another network cable connect port 1 of DI-604 to one win XP computer. Do not plug other computers until we make sure that is working. Open Network property of that computer and make sure no IP or DNS are set and that will receive IP automatically.

Restart the system and open the browser and type: http://192.168.0.1 and press enter, that shall bring you to DI-604 router built-in web site where you can continue with settings.

Go trough login process, once you have log in the screen with “Run Wizard” will appear. Click on “Run Wizard” and on the next page click “Next”

It will ask you to set your new password and on next to chose your time zone.

Now you shall see the screen “Select Internet Connection Type”. If your ISP is not using PPPoE the chose option “Dynamic IP addresses” and click “Next” otherwise chose PPPoE option.

If you chose “Dynamic IP addresses” the next screen is “Set Dynamic IP Address”. Here click “Clone Mac Address and that value shall appear in Mac address fields. If not verify network cable connection and start this process from the start.

If you chose “PPPoE” the next screen is “Set PPPoE”. Here type your ISP assigned user name and password. Click Next.

Now you shall see “Setup Completed” screen. Here click “Restart” and on the next screen click “Close” and after that close your browser window completely.

Open your browser again and try to go to any web site. Type yahoo.com and test it if its working. If not restart your computer and try it again.

Once is working, just plug other computers to the DI-604 ports and make sure that all computers IP and DNS settings are blank and set to receive IP address automatically.

Sorry - I should have said "ipconfig /all" to show the DNS settings and what is the IP address of the router?

Did you get the client and host results switched around? I would have expected the host to have been shown as the default gateway on the client - assuming that the host is the one that is running ICS.

G'day, wilson175, there has not been any activity on this question in 82 days.
Do you still need assistance, need more information, or have you solved your problem? Can you close
out this question?

I fixed the problem myself by upgrading the machine that was running Win98 to Windows XP which also upgraded the browser.
