As I stated in the last question, be sure to power cycle the modem, and you may need to contact your ISP due to the change in MAC address so that you will get an IP address.

Can you ping 24.170.136.193 from the router?
If so,
Try setting your default gateway to 24.170.136.193 :
no ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Eth 0
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 24.170.136.193

by: macdady808Posted on 2003-09-07 at 21:57:24ID: 9307323

does it matter where i put these lines?
also where did you come up with .193?

by: macdady808Posted on 2003-09-07 at 22:23:07ID: 9307398

That seemed to fix it. Threes just one problem, it seems slower than when i was using a linksys router. And almost all the time when I ping an address the first one or two tries time out but then it finishes. whats wrong?

by: lrmoorePosted on 2003-09-08 at 05:03:39ID: 9308808

I came up with .193 by looking at your subnet mask of the interface:
>Internet address is 24.170.136.221/26

The first address in that range is .193
Cable companies typically use the first address as the gateway.

The first one or two pings will time out quite often because the address is not in the arp cache.

As to it seeming slower, there's not much I can say..
Try this:
router#clear counters
[confirm] y

Then, keep an eye on these counters from show interface:
-->   28 output errors, 2 collisions, 1 interface resets
-->    28 lost carrier, 0 no carrier
If they keep going up, then you may need to call the ISP and make sure your MAC address is being recognized.

0 output errors, 6158 collisions, 0 interface resets
     0 babbles, 0 late collision, 13143 deferred

lota collisions. anything i can do to fix this?

about calling the ISP, i have switched my gateway device 5 times, and each one allways worked well except this one. Should I call anyway? I doupt they would support me cus I use my own hardware, i wouldnet even know what questions to begin to ask.

by: macdady808Posted on 2003-09-08 at 19:11:55ID: 9314044

also, a firend said the speed issue coud be because im running in 1/2 duplex, can i set both interfaces to full?

by: lrmoorePosted on 2003-09-08 at 20:25:11ID: 9314575

Collisions are an integral part of half-duplex Ethernet.
Is this the WAN port or the LAN interface? Assuming WAN, you need to set at whatever the cable modem will support, else plug both the modem and the router into a switch that you can set to 10/full duplex.
Collisions are OK, and based on the percentage of total packets are well within reason. Deferred packets also are well within a reasonable percentage of total packets, unless you see dropped packets.

>switched my gateway device 5 times, and each one allways worked well except this one.
Not sure what you mean by "changing gateway device 5 times".  Do you mean 5 different type routers, and this Cisco is the only one that does not work well?
I don't think it is the full/half duplex issue.
Everything works, just seems sluggish?

by: macdady808Posted on 2003-09-08 at 21:55:00ID: 9315512

>switched my gateway device 5 times, and each one allways worked well except this one.
yes, ive used a linksys, dlink, PC, and now this cisco as a net gateway. This cisco _does_ work , but is sluggish. My network is kinda a mess now and maybe that could be part of the problem...
              CM
                |
             Switch
          |             |
      dlink        cisco
          |              |
      switch    10bT hub
     | | | | |           |
       PCs            PC

The speed issue could verry well be in that 10bT hub now that I think about it ( i completely forgot i was using it). Im using it to test this new cisco before I make it my main router. What you think?

by: lrmoorePosted on 2003-09-09 at 10:20:24ID: 9322331

How many IP addresses are you paying for from the cable provider? In your diagram you need at least two. If you don't have two, it's a wonder it works at all because the dlink and the cisco could both be using the same wan IP...

by: macdady808Posted on 2003-09-09 at 11:19:37ID: 9322896

i get 7 IPs from my ISP. heh, yea i have a biz account.

by: lrmoorePosted on 2003-09-09 at 15:07:41ID: 9324543

Just checking...
Any progress?

by: macdady808Posted on 2003-09-09 at 17:53:18ID: 9325227

well i tried a 100bT hub on the cisco, cant really tell any speed inprovements :-/
