VPN service on a Cisco 1600 (cisco is vpn server)

Hi,

I would like to know if it is possible to setup a Cisco 1604 as a VPN gateway, thus that I could connect from the Internet towards my Cisco1600 using a VPN to enter my private LAN. Currently i only use the Cisco1604 to do NAP/PAT but i would like to do more.

Err...
I looked at some examples, and in some cases the was a IOS level needed which was older than my current one and in some a newer one.
Also in these examples the point out to use another cisco model like a 2700 does that matter or are the IOS-es generic ?
The output of sh run is a bit confusing to me, i think i'm currently using IOS V12.2 so that must be sufficient but the commands showed in one exaple like vpdn enable  of crypt do fail. (and yes i was in config mode).
How does this happen then ?  If i do need a IOS upgrade where can i get this, i looked at the Cisco site but was not able to download anything... am I a complete fool or is this normal ???

You have the regular IP version of IOS and you need the IP Plus version to get the VPDN but if you want to do IPSEC 3DES then you need to get the IP PLUS with IPSEC version of IOS. It doesn't matter what version of router they are using to configure as VPDN is supported on almost all of Cisco's router versions to include the 1600. One thing I forgot to mention is that fact that you may require a hardware upgrade to your router should you move to a newer IOS version also. Probably either a memory or flash upgrade will be required.

oh darn...
This is more complex than I expected...
So if I inderstand thing right it could imply that i need a larger flashrom to load this plus version of IOS. How does one normally get an IOS update ?

You have 4Mbytes of flash and about 9Mbytes of RAM in your router. Your upgrade path is going to be extremely limited. At a minimum your going to need at least 6Mbyte flash and about 12 Mbyte of RAM. You can purchase a support package on your router which will get you IOS upgrades and also replacement of your router should anything happen to it, or, you can go to some place like www.cdw.com and order it. You can also get memory and flash upgrades for your router there also.
