A switch is much better, because it will force the network to give equal network resources to all the users.
but with a hub, some users may experience lack of network resources such as slow emails.
hope this helps,
iz.

Browse All TopicsHi Guys,
I have a network with a Win2000 server, and 20 (Win95, Win98, Win2000, WinXP) clients. On the network I have a 3Com SuperStackII hub (10/100 Mbps). Everything works fine, and I don't have any problems. However, I'm wondering if the network would work significantly faster if I changed the hub to a switch. If yes, which one would you recommend? (please provide links if you can)
Thank you very much for your help.

The switch will definitly improve the performance if your users do a lot of FTPs and similar applications (as the hub unlike the switch shares the 100Mb among the users ).
Personnaly I like the Cisco Catalyst series (for instance http://www.cisco.com/en/US
Beware of some potential "problems" you may encounter after the migration hub to switch
- monitoring applications: non-broadcast packets are not copied anymore to all ports
- the switch remembers the MAC address of its clients - depending on the switch it can take some time (3-5 mn) after a move of clients / server to get them working back to ok
Your reseller should be able to give you some advices.

Performance will improve as switch will have their own collision domain, but the improvement will not be that significantly faster as you expected.
LevelOne switch is a good choice. You can visit them at www.level-one.net
