The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Linksys router causes LAN to crash

Linksys router BEFSR41 v3.1 with 4-port switch

A few hours after I turn on the router the LAN becomes either very slow or computers can not communicate - like a time out maybe, they either connect very slow or not at all. The lights are blinking rapidly at that time even with little or no traffic on the router. No one else on the LAN is using the router at all - they just do LAN stuff or have other ways to get to the internet, no one uses it as a NAT router/gateway or anything, just me with three pc's. When I come in to work in the morning everyone complains the network is down, as soon as I unplug the router everything is OK. The router works fine for my internet access, speed is good, NAT works, etc.

Router WAN port and uplink port connected to a Linksys 5-port workgroup switch, three pc's plugged into router-switch ports #1-#3, Linksys 5-port workgroup switch has a couple of pc's connected to it and then uplinked to a Linksys 24-port hub, the DSL modem is plugged into the DSL line and uplinked to the Linksys 24-port hub. So the router-switch goes to the 5-port switch, then the 24-port hub, then the DSL modem.

DHCP is disabled on the router (LAN and WAN), LAN IP is static 10.10.10.1, WAN is static IP from the ISP (covad).

Linksys had me to this:
1. reset to factory defaults
2. flash the firmware (actually it was a downgrade to a previous version since the current version is not on their site, in fact they claim v3.1 "doesn't exist, v3.0 is the newest" so the flash was a downgrade to the v3.0 flash.
3. change LAN IP to static 10.10.10.1

This seems to have helped a little bit but not much - I basically have the same problem only a little less severe.
