Question

Cisco 3524XL Configuration Questions

Asked by: pamsauto

We currently have a 3524XL switch in service and would like to hook another 3524XL in the network using the GBIC ports.  If I copy the config from one switch to the other (if I even have to), what other settings do I need to set before this would start working?

Depending on what exactly you want to do, the 3524 will work straight out of the box.  If you want to uplink it to another switch by GBIC, its just a matter of connecting them up and configuring the port if theres anything to be configured - vlan trunking etc.  Why do you want to copy the config from one over the other?
If you want to manage it, assign it an ip address, subnet mask and default gateway if necessary.  Create a vlan database and add vlans as necessary.  I'd have a look at the other switches config to see what it is doing but a GBIC is just like another interface - it will have an interface ref in the config and only requires configuring for certain functionality like VLANS etc

hope this helps

ok, I hooked up the hardware and basiclly nothing happened.  I went into the new switch and coppied port settings and configured the gigabit interfaces with the same as a etherport settings.  I can telnet and ping the switch, but I am not getting connectivity to any pcs on it.  Here are my configs the first is the old switch and the second is the new one.

If this is the port that you are using to link them together:
>interface GigabitEthernet0/1

Then you need to reset those interfaces to trunk ports:

ie.

(same on both switches)

interface GigabitEthernet0/1
 no switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
no switchport trunk native vlan 10
no switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,10,110,1002-1005
 no switchport mode trunk
 no switchport voice vlan 110
no switchport priority extend cos 0
 switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
 switchport mode trunk

I would add to lrmoore that you should check to see if your using a VTP domain on the "old" switch and if it is set as a vtp domain server.  do the following to see

show vtp stats

that will show if the old switch is set as a server and assigned a domain.  If it is do the following on the new switch

config t
vtp mode client
vtp domain <domainname>
end
write

this will setup your new switch as a client of the old switch and the Vlan database should propagate over the trunk link.

if you get digest errors that means you have a vtp password set.  Find out what it is or reset it on both swtiches using the following.

config t
vtp passwd <password>  #do this on both switches if you don't know what the current password is.
end
write

NOTE: Before you make these changes to your new switch disconnect it momentarily from the old one.  I have noticed on occassion if you add a new switch to a VTP domain while it's already connected it can sometimes mess up the works.  Some of the problem being Revision related but other strange happens have occurred on my switches if I don't disconnect them first.

I am still not getting connectivity.  I checked the VTP and to me it looks to not be in use.  This is the stuff in the config I have changed.

I can Telnet to the New switch via the Vlan10.  Does anyone have any more advice for me?

by: ajschrohPosted on 2005-07-20 at 20:15:37ID: 14491239

what exactly are you trying to do on the new switch.  From what I see you only have Vlan 1 and Vlan 10 built on the new switch.  You didn't build VLAN 3 or VLAN 110.  You say you can hit the new switch via VLAN 10 which makes sense since you gave them vlan a IP address.  Vlan one is IP less.  So what exactly are you trying to accomplish.  It looks like Vlan 110 is a voice network....but you didn't build that on the new switch.  I have no idea what vlan 3 is supposed to be.  Are you just having issues passing IP traffic from the new switch into your network?

by: pamsautoPosted on 2005-07-21 at 12:25:28ID: 14496465

I am just trying to pass IP traffic to the new switch.  My understanding was that Vlans are for management only.  If that is not the case then yes I should build vlan110 for our Voip traffic.

by: ajschrohPosted on 2005-07-22 at 18:29:24ID: 14508182

vlans are for seperating ports or groups of ports into seperate virtual networks.  Let's say you have 2 groups of people doing 2 entirely different tasks.  You don't want them to be able to see each other let alone access each others resources.  You would either build 2 seperate physical networks or you would put each group in a seperate Vlan.

Question on your new switch:

If you do a show vlan's what vlan's are shown?

Also did you do this (what lrmoore recommended) on the old switch as you did on the new switch?

interface GigabitEthernet0/1
 no switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
no switchport trunk native vlan 10
no switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,10,110,1002-1005
 no switchport mode trunk
 no switchport voice vlan 110
no switchport priority extend cos 0
 switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
 switchport mode trunk

the gigabit ports on both sides have to match.  Also do the following on BOTH switches as I see it's shutdown

config t
int vlan 1
no shutdown

Vlan information is propagated from switch to switch across trunks using VLAN 1.  It can't do that if it's disabled.  That might be part of your problem as well.
