Hi everyone. I am very new to this whole venue and am a bit confused by all the different config's for the various flavors of hardware setups out there. I will attempt to make this as clear and understandable as possible, given the fact that I am a cisco newbie, brought to your attention up front.
WHAT I HAVE TO WORK WITH:
--------------------------
----------
---
1 Cisco 2651 Router:
-1 WIC-1ADSL for POTS
-1 Fractional T1 CSU/DSU on Serial 0/1
NOTE: This router is (or was) under the default factory configuration, before I attempted to "configure" it by mashing the keyboard with my forehead during hour #7 yesterday. It should probably be reset and started fresh (again..).
1 Cisco 2950T-24 Switch with the enhanced image. The switch is working fine, so it seems, and I'm fairly comfortable with it's configuration parameters. Should we need to alter it, I am confident that is something within my scope of ability.
1 ADSL line with a DHCP generated IP, using PPPoE and auth'ing via my username / password.
Within my LAN, I have IP addressing setup as follows:
10.0.0.1 assigned to the 2651 Router at FastEthernet 0/0
10.0.0.2 assigned to the 2651 Router at Fast Ethernet0/1
10.0.0.3 assigned to the 2950 Switch
10.0.0.21 assigned to Rack1, Server2, Gigabit port 1
10.0.0.22 assigned to Rack1, Server2, Gigabit port 2
255.0.0.0 subnet mask
I am able to get into the ADSL modem (not the WIC) provided by the ISP and see the config params, so I can probably answer most any question with regard to modulation, encapsulation, etc. etc..
WHAT I NEED:
--------------------
HELP!!! I want my ADSL to work via the WIC-1ADSL and provide internet connectivity to my LAN, for now. In a few days the telco will arrive to tie in the T1 and install the smartjack. At that point I would like to introduce the T1 to my 2651 and hope that I can get the ADSL & T1 to play nicely together. I have other 2651's in the datacenter and am thinking about using the T1 on a seperate router (same LAN) to provide ouotbound failover in the event one goes down. I saw this type of setup in a post by Mr. Moore elsewhere on this site.
But for now, I just want my PPPoE ADSL to provide internet to my LAN. One of the areas I am getting confused on, is how to do this when the ADSL circuit is using PPoE and DHCP. All the config examples I have read so far are for ADSL with PPPoA and / or Static IP's. Can we config my 2651 to get it's IP from the WIC-1ADSL, but still maintain my LAN IP schema? For obvious reasons, I don't want the servers to be DHCP clients. I don't really mind if the workstations are DHCP and setting up a WIN2K3 DHCP server, but at this point static addressing for the workstations is just as easy.
I have been working this problem for a good while now. I have read countless pages and even bought books like: CCNA Study Guide, and Cisco Routers for the desperate (raises hand). Perhaps it is an information overload, and with so many different sources, (none of which have been for my exact setup) I am completely lost.
IS THERE HOPE?
--------------------
I say "yes". Why? Because I have the capacity to learn. Especially from examples. If someone can PLEASE hold my hand through the initial config's for this, I am certain I can use those to modify & build on for when the Telco arrives and says that "It's not our responsibility after the demarc". In which case I will need to gather my working config resources and try to get the new T1 up, etc..
I'm familiar with the CCLI basics and can edit the config's. Oh yeah, and if there is any CCNA / IE / NP in or near Idaho Falls, ID, and wants to earn a quick cash payday, let me know!!! I have put out the request a few places and haven't had much luck so far. I'd even hire a Qualified technician to help get this setup via telephone / SNMP or telnet. If I could make this dollars instead of points, I'd still think 500 wasn't enough. :-)
Sorry if this was a little long winded. I think I have made my points clear enough to get started though.
Thanks in advance,
Rob
