Question

I am unable to console into my cisco 1720 router from my winXP machine?

When I console into the router using hyperterm this is what I see.

hi there

What speed connection are you using in hyperterminal?
9600, 8, 1, none is the statndard defalt connection settings.  If the router had been changed to console at a different speed, you can try changing your baud rate to match this - 19200, 38400 etc.

When you have this screen - if you reboot the router, do you see any legit text appear or is it all illegible like above?

You were right nodisco!!  I changed the default 9600 to 38400 and it worked.  How do you change the speed back to 9600 on the router.  I recently upgraded both the flash and the ram so the router is booting to rommon.  How do load an image into flash from rommon?  Thanks.  Dale

You can follow the procedure here to change the baud rate to 9600

You can follow the above link to upload the IOS using rommon (It would be very slow.. Lot of patience needed)

I have an image on my computer already.  How can I get it on the blank router flash?  Thanks Dale.

You can you the tftpdnld command to load the image from rommon mode.
