Question

Server not found. Firefox can't find the server at--

Asked by: ggwatts

I get this message about 1 of 5 times from any site. Most often a retry will bring up the site on the second attempt but rarely, I cannot get to the site at that time. Sometimes the "Retry" button wll not work and it is necessary to click the original link again.

Nearly everything I find on the net  relates to this problem with only certain specific programs and is not cured with a second attempt.

This began several days ago and seems to be getting worse. I install and download many things but I cannot recall any specific program to relate this problem to. Uninstalling Sygate firewall > no help.

The message also occurs with a 3 day old, new laptop computer which is cabled  to my D-Link 604 router. Both Win XP with Svc pack2. NAV on desktop and AVG on new laptop.
Thank you.

Perhaps you have multiple DNS servers defined and the first one is unavailble causing the timeout?

by: nomorefuzzylogicPosted on 2006-01-10 at 07:41:38ID: 15661450

It does sound like a DNS problem.
Could be caused by overactive DNS at the ISP.

However it depends on the web site you are looking for - if the web site uses a dynamic IP address (unlikely for the 'big names'), and this address changes, the Windows DNS cache could maintain the old address for 24 hours. You could try "ipconfig flushdns" as per http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prjj_ipa_vitx.asp after a 'Not Found' and see if it will then work. At least this will check if this is an issue.

harbor235: How to tell?

nomorefuzzylogic: Flushing did not help or at most > a slight decrease in the message.

Does not the problem on both computers localize the problem to the router? It also happens with a 3rd old laptop wired into the router.
Thank you.

by: nomorefuzzylogicPosted on 2006-01-10 at 15:48:12ID: 15666726

Well, the cache is held on each PC, so it could have been an issue on each PC but that seems to have now been eliminated as a cause.
The next cause could be in the router or it could be the ISP DNS server.
Can you find a second DNS server on the ISP?
Try a reverse lookup on the IP address of the DNS server shown on the router - this might give a clue as to the second - DNS Servers are often named sequencially ie DNS1.ISP.COM.
Try a ping / tracert to each DNS server - see which is fastest / nearest
Then you can add this DNS server into one of the PC's with a static IP Address and don't forget the default gateway address (your router).
If this alleviates the problem on that PC then you can assume that he problem is on teh server assigned by the ISP for the IP address you are assigned - if you have a fixed IP address then you are probably always using the same DNS server.
It could also be possible that you have a routing issue to the DNS server - so again this could be PC config related. Are you using DHCP from the router to set the PC's - if so then the PC side config is not likely to be the cause.

I am lost in the above. Does this tell you anything? If not I will need more explicit directions. I don't know how to recognize the DNS servers on the ISP (Charter Communications)  or that shown on the router. I am using defaults for most if not all settings. Connection to ISP is dynamic.

Reverse DNS for 208.223.219.206
Generated by www.DNSstuff.com

charter.com is not an IP address, so I am using 208.223.219.206 (the A record for charter.com).

Location: United States [City: Chesterfield, Missouri]

Preparation:
The  reverse DNS entry for an IP is found by reversing the IP, adding it to "in-addr.arpa", and looking up the PTR record.
So, the reverse DNS entry for 208.223.219.206 is found by looking up the PTR record for
 206.219.223.208.in-addr.arpa.
All DNS requests start by asking the root servers, and they let us know what to do next.
See How Reverse DNS Lookups Work for more information.

How I am searching:
Asking f.root-servers.net for 206.219.223.208.in-addr.arpa PTR record:
f.root-servers.net says to go to figwort.arin.net. (zone: 208.in-addr.arpa.)
Asking figwort.arin.net. for 206.219.223.208.in-addr.arpa PTR record:
       figwort.arin.net [192.42.93.32] says to go to AUTH00.NS.UU.NET. (zone: 223.208.in-addr.arpa.)
Asking AUTH00.NS.UU.NET. for 206.219.223.208.in-addr.arpa PTR record:
       auth00.ns.uu.net [198.6.1.65] says to go to ns2.catalystsolutions.net. (zone: 219.223.208.in-addr.arpa.)
Asking ns2.catalystsolutions.net. for 206.219.223.208.in-addr.arpa PTR record:  Reports www.charter.com. [from 208.223.216.6]

Answer:
208.223.219.206 PTR record: www.charter.com. [TTL 86400s] [A=208.223.219.206]

To see the reverse DNS traversal, to make sure that all DNS servers are reporting the correct results, you can Click Here.

by: nomorefuzzylogicPosted on 2006-01-11 at 04:55:25ID: 15669809

The info is in there:-
ns0.charter.com.     A     IN     86400     24.196.241.10
ns1.charter.com.     A     IN     86400     24.196.241.11
ns2.charter.com.     A     IN     86400     24.213.60.79
ns3.charter.com.     A     IN     86400     24.197.96.17
ns4.charter.com.     A     IN     86400     24.205.1.12

So try the ping / tracert and each IP Address (not by name) and carry on as per my previous entry

Login to your router and see which one has been allocated to your connection - when problems occur on a workstation you can change the DNS server address and see if you still get problems.

DNS
      24.197.96.16 24.197.96.15

Each of the nsx.charter  ping TTL 242 and 32-33 ms.

Plugging the first DNS, 24.197.96.16 into a static IP address of the laptop > intermittent (1 of 15 clicks) failure, about the same as with automatic.

Using 24.196.241.10 (one of the successful pings) as static IP address in the laptop > no connection at all.
Using 66.191.218.207, IP address of the WAN,  > no connection.

Does “Enabled DHCP Server” above answer your question whether I am using the DHCP from the router to set the PCs?

If so does this suggest the problem is with Charter?

The intermittent nature if the disconnect makes evaluation of results difficult.

Thank you.

The DHCP Server Enabled shows that you COULD use the DHCP server to allocate addresses (DNS Server and Default Gateway) to the PC's. It doesn't actually show that you are using it. To see if you are using it you could check the Clients/DHCP Allocation table in the 604 to see if the address of your PC has been allocated to it or you can look at the properties of the LAN connection on your PC and see if it is set to obtain the IP address dynamically.

Just to give you an indcation of what I am trying to identify I would say that I have had the same problem and it was traced to one specific router at the ISP - when I was allocated certain IP addresses from their dynamic range I would get the DNS Server time-outs (not every lookup but very often). The only way I could prove this to them was to keep resetting my Internet connection to get a different IP address (and sometime different DNS server) and look for a pattern where the DNS timeouts would occur - I found a range of 64 dynamically assigned IP addresses where the DNS server time-outs would occur. Passing this on to the ISP fixed the 3 week old problem within an hour.

I am a bit confused by your comments above regarding what you did with the static settings - you say that you set the static IP of the laptop to be the address of one of the DNS servers - did you really mean that?
I wanted you to set the IP address of the notebook to be an address on the 192.168.0.x subnet (I see from your last comment that is what your subnet is - didn't know that before) and set the fixed DNS server address to be the address of each DNS server in turn. Then you can try, for each of the DNS servers, to identify the one (or more) that give you lookup failures.
A good way to decide on a fixed IP address for the notebook is to do an ipconfig to find ot the address that was assigned by the 604 DHCP serverand just to plus that address in as the fixed IP.
You can use nslookup as a slightly quicker way than using IE to se if you can resolve addresses from teh DNS server.

Note that when you have an IP assigned by the 604 DHCP server then the LAN IP address of the 640 will be used as both the default gateway and the DNS server.

by: nomorefuzzylogicPosted on 2006-01-13 at 04:36:16ID: 15690778

. also forgot to add reminder to set static default gateway to be 192.168.0.1 (the LAN address of your 604) so that the PC knows how to get out to the Internet.

Yes, DHCP client table > addresses of the various PCs. See below. Both laptop and desktop computers are to obtain IP addreses automaticly.

Re did I set static IP of the laptop (24.197.96.15 is the one you mean? I don’t totally understand what I am doing.) to DNS server? I probably did that. If it was not supposed to connect as it did, there is probably a typo somewhere.

Using 192.168.0.99 as IP address on the laptop > fail on 15th link click without DNS

With IP 192.168.0.99
                     DNS 24.196.241.10 > fail on 19th click.
                              24.196.241.11 > fail on 19th click.
                              24.213.60.79 > fail on 4th click
                              24.197.96.17 > fail on 7th click
                               24.205.1.12 > fail on 21st click.

I don’t know what to do, if anything, with your last paragraph re IP assigned.

Re final comment I did not set any default gateways but since I connected I assume it is not necessary to repeat?

Did I answer all?

OK - some other thoughts here

Are you using any other strange so called firewall or protection software on your PC's?
Do the other PC's (LindaComputer or Dell800) have the same problem.
Are all machines using Firefox
Do you get the same problem using IE?
Can you change the MTU on the D-Link 604? Try 1400 and see if that improves DNS - this is a bit severe but because we don't know the best value for your link its good for testing. You can determine best value later if it helps.

Checkout http://www.tweakguides.com/Firefox_9.html and the entries relating to Firefox & DNS
Looks like others have had DNS problems with Firefox http://www.screamingelectron.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1388
so maybe its not your particular setup after all

Google on "firefox dns" without the quotes

Running NAV for years, Spybot, AdAware, MS AntiSpyware and Spyware Blaster. I disabled SpywareBlaster which was instralled around the time this began but 3 clicks > fail.

Running only Windows firewall. ZA uninstalled months ago, Sygate uninstalled when this problem began about 2 weeks ago.

LindaComputer 55 clicks > no fail. But Linda says she  sees the message "all the time".
Turion new laptop fails just like desktop Athalon
Dell800 long gone.
8100mobile old  laptop fails after 3 clicks

Are all machines using Firefox, Yes, including LindaComputer

Do you get the same problem using IE?  No. 50 clicks with IE as well as 30 minutes with NS most every day > no failures.

MTU 1400 > fail after 5 clicks.

I un and reinstalled FireFox and > fail after 7 clicks before I restored profile.

I just noticed. There are 2 error messages and sometimes it is this one which does not have a retry button like the one alluded to  in the subject line.

"Server not found

I would expect more on the net if this were Charter systemic.
So, much usage of NS ok and limited test of IE > no error. I hate to give up FireFox.

Just two more suggestions
1) Check the router firmware and upgrade if later available & Reset your MTU to where it was - 1472 usually best
2) There is a Firefox IPv6 setting which can cause problems in some cases:
     Enter about:config in location bar
Find network.dns.disableIPv6 and toggle the setting

Otherwise it sounds like firefox to me.

Re up router firmware > no effect.
Disable IPv6 > no change.

I found this on a board. As I understand it, this will just stop the messages but it does not help the "not found" problem. Do you agree? Any problem with trying this?

"If you want the old annoying alert boxes back then
Type about:config in location (address) bar
filter for browser.xul.error_pages.enabled
Right-click and toggle Value to false."

I don't use Firefox but Igather this just toggles between a 'standard' error page when destination cannot be found and an annoying modal pop-up dialogue box. Comments on it I have seen indicate that this should be set to FALSE (or is it TRUE - I don't know because on 2 references I have seen 2 versions) other wise you get the pop-up. Unlikely to have any effect on your problem though.

Sorry - it does sound like a Firefox issue (or something else you have loaded on your machine).
If IE works fine but Firefox doesn't then I guess we can discount external influences.

You could try disabling NAV, Adaware and Spyware Blaster - I don't like any of these for various reasons - apart from the fact that I get no problems without these things and nor do my clients - just make sure your WinXP, Outlook and IE are up to date with all patches and pop-up blocking set.
