cannot connect to cisco 678.

Got a cisco 678 router for my home, I have the mgt cable both blue and black ones along with the connector for my serial port. I have tried in failure to connect to the router using the hyperterminal app. I have tried com1, com3 with 38400 and not flow control. now that I think about it I have tried every setting in hyperterminal but get the same results. it says it is connected but I do not get the prompts or can i type anything in. Can anyone give any insight on how to correctly (successfully) connect to the router please. thanks in advance.
