Question

cisco 3500 series console trouble

Asked by: joegolfer59

Trying to console into a Cisco 3500 series XL router with no success.  I am using HyperTerminal to do so and was successful when connecting to a Cisco 2600 and 2950 series so my console cable is good.  Is there anything that changes for this type of router?

I think you mean 3500XL switch, right?

Same console cable, same settings (9600,N,8,1).

If the switch is working, either the console port is bad or the settings have been changed. Can you telnet to it?

Yes, 3500xl switch.  Cannot telnet either, also on the front display, the system light is flashing and pressing the mode button does nothing.  Port 1,2 and 3,4 are not lit, and ports 5,6 are an amber color.  Ports 7-24 are green.

Hi Joe,

Let's isolate the problem first.  (a) mark the network cables, (b) remove them from the swith, (c) connect to the console, (d) power the switch off then on - observe console output for error, (d) check and see if the system light is still flashing after the boot (unit error)

If all goes well try to telnet, look at configuration and then reconnect cables one at a time.

Good luck - Gnart

Gnart,
Is that what the flashing system light means is unit error, if so, after all that, it continues to do so.  Is there anyway to fix it or is it as good as done?
Thanks

Flashing LED, huh?

If there's nothing plugged into ports 5 & 6, it's probably time for a new switch... Unless it's under SmartNet maintenance.

Hi joegolfer59,

Flashing light with nothing plugged in and no error on console, bad news, there is only one thing left to try.  If you have another switch, you can open them up and swap memory modules to see if the memory module is bad.  Beyond that repair, replace the switch - if it's under SmartNet then contact Cisco (see don's link)...

Sorry for the bad news.... Gnart....

Well sorry guys.  Not much to help us but came in today and plugged it up and worked fine... Weird.  But thanks for the help.
