We have a killer brand new infrastructure. Dual 10Gig from the Black diamond 8810 core routers (2) to our closet summit 450s. All Extreme gear. Gig to the desktop. Our Windows machines are moving pretty good. But our Macs are freakishly slow. Here is the scenario. I mount a AFP server volume. Drag a file (600mb) to that volume to copy to the server. The file transfer window displays time to copy "about 5 minutes" and the progress bar doesnt move. sometimes it will eventually start the transfer and the progress bar will say "23 hours" other times it never starts or i get sick of waiting. The client machines are Apple Macintosh machines. G5 desktops and MacBook Pro laptops. All running Mac OSX version 10.4. A packet capture sheds some interesting light on the matter. As the file transfer is started, the capture shows multiple requests for the server with no reply.
I have isolated the issue by connecting a dumb Nortel GigE switch directly to the server and then connecting a client machine to that switch. Bam! No problem. Fast file transfers. Argh! Extreme says it's a Mac issue. Apple says it's an Extreme issue. What can I do?
