Hi Everyone:
Recently, with the help from the experts of this technical forum, I was able to troubleshoot a DNS issue with a couple of computers connected to the router. From this experience, I have been trying to learn as much as possible from it. One suggestion brought up was a possible problem in the DNS relay of the router which brings me to the purpose of this post. What exactly is DNS relay within a router and what is its function?
Any shared thoughts or ideas to this question will be appreciated.

A normal DNS server maintains it's own records. When you query it, it attemps to resolve the query locally, if it can not find a matching entry, it will forward the query to the next upstream DNS server (known as forwarders). A DNS forwarding server (or RELAY) takes the request and paases it to the DNS it has configured as a forwarder (without trying to resolve it, because it doesn't have a local database). It recieves the answer from the upstream DNS server and passes it back to the client. As far as the client is concerned, the DNS RELAY has answered the query.

It simply listens to the local LAN on port 53 and forwards all the requests to the routers configured DNS server (upstream).
The advantage of this is that if your router connects to different networks with different DNS servers, you dont have to reconfigure all the LAN clients
