Estimating wireless network range

I was so pleased with myself. To replace the LAN cables draped all over the house I have finally bought a wireless router,  plus three PCI wireless LAN cards and wireless LAN USB for the laptop.

Surprise, surprise! The wireless signal is not even usable in the next room, let alone upstairs.

I now gather that this is only a surprise to first-time wireless users.

Obviously I must do something about replacing or augmenting the equipment, but there seems to be very little published information that enables one to compare different kit. Range is expressed in outside distance, inside or not at all. Power is rarely stated, and if it is, the figures for different equipment are very close to each other.
