Backup a Cisco 2500 Config and restore to another Cisco 2500

I have two Cisco 2500 Routers.

One is working fine and the other is going to be our backup, I want to setup the  backup so it is exactly like the primary.

I am not versed in Cisco or router know how so I would like to know the easiest method of making the backup a mirror of the primary, so I can swap them out if the primary goes bad.

That would be great I guess if both were configured the same, but one is "new" in box and the other was specifically configured before I came to work at my place of employment. It is not out of the box ready. So I need the second to have the same settings as the first.

I am not terribly worried about one failing and having the other takeover immediately, I am more concerned with coming in one morning, seeing the main 2500 fail and being able to plug in the backup, power up and go.

so, I need to make the backup configuration the same as the main, the links you provided do not seem to address that.  Or did I miss something?

First, this assumes both routers are IDENTICAL.

Log in to the current working router and do a show run. Copy that output to your favorite text editor.

Then, log in to the new router (not connected to the network). Get into config mode and paste the text from the editor to the new router. Get out of config mode and do a "copy run start".

When the existing routers fails, just replace it with the new one.

You should probably test this during a maintenance window just to be sure.

That sounds great.. simple and easy (both routers are identical).. but

1. How do I get into config mode?
I can log in but I am not sure what mode is config.

2. I can paste more than one line at a time into the router via hyperterminal (serial connection)?
(I am assuming the run command will give me more than one line of text)

3. How do I get out of config mode?

Router> enable
password <you have to enter the password here>
Router# conf t
Router(config)#    <--- This is config mode. To get out, type "end".

And yes, you type paste in multiple lines.
