Having to Keep Unplugging Modem and Router

Tags: Linksys
I have AT&T DSL and a linksys router for a small office setup.  It works great but every now and then I have to do the old power off and unplugging of both the modem and router for some reason.

I have heard this was due to static build up, is that true?

Should I put an electronic switch on the actual power supply to both the modem and router or is their a way to prevent the static build up all together?

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Noise on the line should be solved by wire troublshooting by the telco.  If it is beyond the MPOE (in your building), then your low-voltage wiring guys should be tracing it.

The timer won't solve the problem when the connection goes down randomly during the day.  You'd end up rebooting the device manually anyway.

Regularly scheduled reboots are a crutch.  Better to fix the problem.  You will be much happier with the performance and reliability if you have a good working modem and clean line!

Not anyone's fault....we're asking copper lines over half a century old to handle long haul, high speed data transmissions via an analog tone.    Alexander Graham Bell's first words "Mr. Watson, come here..." only went down the hall.

DSL can be implemented successfully.  Sometimes, there is a bit of troubleshooting and cajoling over the first few weeks until the the service provider gets service humming along nicely.

Best of luck.
