Question

Cisco 2620 will not boot after IOS upgrade

Asked by: mdelanoche

 I recently upgraded our 2620 from 12.2 to 12.4.  However after I upgraded it I get the following error:

device does not contain a valid magic number
boot: cannot open "flash:"
boot: cannot determine first file name on device "flash:"

   Which then puts me into Rommom 1>

  I have tried reloading through Rommon but I recieve this error

***System Recieved a Software forced crash*****
signal= 0x17, code= 0x4, Context= 0x800803b0
PC= 0x0, Vector = 0x0, SP = 0x0

  I would like to erase what is currently on the flash and basically start fresh like a new Router.  Can anyone point me in the right direction for either resolving it or wiping it clean.  This is not a priority it is a development router so its not in production.

  Thanks,

Try a different boot option...

Config# boot system tftp FILENAME SERVER_IP - Example: boot system tftp 2600_ios.bin 192.168.14.2

·  Config# boot system ROM

·  Config# boot system flash - Then - Config# reload

OR

If you copied the image to the flashcard by using it or formatting it from a different router then this can occur. Format the flashcard on this router and then try to copy the image as here

ok seems a corrupt IOS image that you have
now i need to know some basic info

1- did you wipe out the old image ?
2- if no then what commands did you use to boot the image ?

if you didnt wipe out the old image then simply do the following on rommon
- do a dir flash:  >>> to get the exact old image file name
- boot flash:filename
- if the dir doesnt show anything use the dev command to see the available device and see if the flash is among them

now if you dont have the old image we will have to do it the hard way as we'd need to upload the new ios version
below is the instructions to use xmodem however better use the ymodem instead as it is faster i guess it would be the same commands
