The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Can't ping computers on the other subnet

Hi everyone, I have a home network that is configured in the following way:

                                                                               Cisco 2600 Router
Bell Sympatico DSL 192.168.1.1 ----------> Fa0/1 192.168.1.254 (External)
                                                                    Fa0/0 192.168.0.254 (Internal) ------------> Catalyst 2900
                                                                                                                                            Vlan1 only
                                                                                                                                   192.168.0.0 Subnet

All the computers in the default Vlan1 can ping other computers in the 192.168.0.0 subnet no problem. The computers can also ping the default 0.254, 1.254 & 1.1 gateways no problem. They can also go out to the internet no problem.

I have however a laptop that is on the 192.168.1.0 subnet. The laptop has the following STATIC ip address assigned

IP:              192.168.1.5
Mask:         255.255.255.0
Gateway:  192.168.1.1
DNS:          Dns of the ISP

The laptop can go out to the internet no problem, however whe I try to ping any hosts on the 192.168.0.0 subnet the request is timed out. I can ping  the 192.168.1.254 interface fine. Here is a quick configuration of my router:

what are the nat statements doing there ??
remove the inside and outside and it would work

05.09.2008 at 10:14PM PDT, ID: 21537929
Hi Ineed the NAT statements in order for all the hosts on the 192.168.0.0 to go out to the internet. Without the NAT the computers cannot access the internet.

Thanks

The problem(s) is that you're doing NAT on your 2600. As far as anything outside the 2600 is concerned, the 192.168.0.0 network doesn't exist. You should be able to access the 192.168.1.5 device from the 192.168.0.0 net but not the other way around.

If you need to initiate traffic to the 192.168.0.0 network from the 192.168.1.5 device, you'll need to create a static NAT entry.

The only catch is that (in this example) you will only be able to telnet in to one address.

1:
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.0.x 23 192.168.1.254 23

donjohnston seems a very expert user but i think there should be still some way to do and still use the nat but it needs a deep look at it

05.11.2008 at 07:45PM PDT, ID: 21544414
Hello, I apologize for the late reply, however i have tried your suggestion of typing in
ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.0.x 23 192.168.1.254 23

but it did not work, hosts on the 192.168.1.0 subnet still cannot ping any computers on 192.168.0.0 subnet... should this be perhaps controlled with the access lists?

What application is the device on the 1.0 network trying to access? In my example, I was using telnet as the application (port 23).

First, remove any ACL's from your interfaces until you get the forwarding to work. Otherwise, you could be troubleshooting two overlapping problems.

Hi I have removed from Fa0/0  ip access-group inside in and from Fa0/1  ip access-group outside in, but im still having the same problem.

I use the  access-list 23 permit 192.168.0.0 0.0.0.255 & access-list 23 permit 10.10.10.0 0.0.0.255 to allow the two vlans to go out to the internet.

Anything else that i can try?

Thank You

post the output of a "show ip nat trans".

Then before you try to establish the remote desktop connection to 192.168.1.254, do a "debug ip nat"
